Petrópolis leans hard into its German and Italian settler heritage when it comes to festivals, and the calendar peaks in June and July with the Bauernfest, the biggest event of the year. Most festivals are free to enter, take place in the Palácio de Cristal and Quitandinha grounds, and draw big weekend crowds from Rio, so book accommodation early. Petrópolis Events and Festivals: Bauernfest (June to July)
The Bauernfest, the Festa do Colono Alemão, celebrates the German settlers who arrived in the mid-1800s and runs for about 17 days from mid-June to early July (in 2026, 19 June to 5 July). The Palácio de Cristal and surrounding streets fill with folkloric dance groups, beer taps, and stalls selling sausages, sauerkraut and strudel. Entry is free, and food and drink are paid for with a charge card you top up at the gate. Weekends are packed, so come on a weekday evening for a calmer experience. Petrópolis Events and Festivals: Festival de Inverno (July)
The Festival de Inverno, or Winter Festival, runs through July at the SESC Quitandinha cultural centre, with concerts, theatre, dance and children’s programming spread across the palace’s halls and lakefront. Most shows are free or low-cost, and the programme is released a few weeks before the month begins. It overlaps with the school holidays, so July is the busiest month of the year in the city. The Serra Serata is the Italian counterpart to the Bauernfest, held over a long weekend in October at the Palácio de Cristal. It celebrates the Italian immigrants who settled the Serra with pasta, polenta, wine and Italian folk music, and it is smaller and more relaxed than the June event. Entry is free. The Trezena de Santo Antônio runs for 13 days in early June around the feast of Saint Anthony on 13 June, with nightly processions, food stalls and quadrilha folk dancing in the historic centre. It is a warm-up to the Bauernfest and a more local, less crowded affair. Most events are free and centred on the cathedral and surrounding streets.

Through December the city dresses up as the “Natal Imperial” with a Christmas market, choir concerts and light displays around the Museu Imperial and Palácio de Cristal, plus a traditional arrival of Santa. Petrópolis marks its founding on 16 March 1843 with a civic celebration around the anniversary date, including parades, concerts and special museum programmes across a long weekend.
