The city fills with day-trippers and weekenders from Rio every Saturday and Sunday, and the Museu Imperial queue can run 40 minutes by 11:00 on a sunny weekend. December through February is the weakest time to visit. January and December each bring about 230 mm of rain and heavy afternoon storms, and summer humidity above 80 percent makes walking tiring. January in particular is when the Serra is most prone to the heavy rain that triggers landslides on the BR-040 and floods in the valley districts.
