Jericoacoara has a tropical climate with a short rainy season and a long, windy dry season, but the temperature barely moves all year. Daytime highs sit between 30°C and 31°C (86°F to 88°F) every month, overnight lows range from 22°C to 24°C (72°F to 75°F), and the sea stays around 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 82°F). The village records about 1,000 to 1,200mm of rain a year, nearly all of it between February and May. The rest of the year is dry and dominated by steady trade winds of 20 to 30 knots, which is why this corner of Ceará is one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world. Here is the full Jericoacoara weather by month breakdown, part of our complete Jericoacoara travel guide.
Jericoacoara Weather by Month: January to March
January is the gateway into the rainy season. It averages a high of 31°C (88°F) and a low of 24°C (75°F), with around 80mm of rain. February brings more cloud and about 140mm, while March is the wettest month of the year at roughly 240mm, with rain on 20 to 24 days. Downpours are heavy but short, usually arriving in the late afternoon or overnight, so mornings stay usable for the beach and lagoons. The sea holds at 28°C (82°F), which makes swimming comfortable even on overcast days. If you travel in this window, plan around the showers using our best time to visit Jericoacoara guide.
Jericoacoara Weather by Month: April to June
April is usually the rainiest month of the year, averaging about 250mm, and the freshwater lagoons behind the dunes are at their fullest. Rain tapers through May to roughly 150mm as the trade winds begin to return. By June the dry season has set in, rainfall drops to about 60mm, and long sunny stretches return. Highs hold at 30°C (86°F) and lows at 23°C (73°F). June is a good compromise month: the rain is mostly gone but the peak wind and prices have not yet arrived. For water-based plans, see our things to do in Jericoacoara guide.
Jericoacoara Weather by Month: July to September
July, August and September are the driest and windiest months. August averages just 10mm of rain and September about 5mm across only a few days, making September the driest month of the year. Nighttime lows drop to 22°C (72°F), the coolest readings of the year, and wind consistently reaches 20 to 30 knots. This is the core kitesurfing season, when the beaches fill with riders and schools run back-to-back lessons. Sunshine averages 9 to 10 hours a day in August and September. Check the wind calendar in our Jericoacoara events and festivals article, where the main competitions land in this window.
Jericoacoara Weather by Month: October to December
October is the sunniest month of the year, averaging about 10 hours of sunshine a day and only 5mm of rain. November keeps nearly identical conditions with around 10mm, and both months host the biggest kitesurfing events. December warms slightly, with lows back at 24°C (75°F) and about 40mm of rain as the first showers of the next rainy season approach. Highs sit at 31°C (88°F) through the whole period. Jericoacoara Weather by Month: Wind, Sea and Planning
The trade winds blow most reliably from June to January and peak between September and November, which is when kitesurfers and windsurfers get the strongest, steadiest conditions. The sea runs 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 82°F) all year, so no wetsuit is needed for swimming, paddling or wind sports. Humidity sits high at roughly 75 to 80 percent, but the constant breeze keeps the heat comfortable. Pack a light jumper for cool evenings in July and August, when lows reach 22°C (72°F).
