Jericoacoara is a car-free beach village on the northeast coast of Brazil, inside a protected national park in the state of Ceará. Daytime temperatures sit at 30°C to 31°C (86°F to 88°F) in every month, the sea holds at 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 82°F), and steady trade winds from June to January have made it one of the world’s top kitesurfing destinations. The village gets about 1,000 to 1,200mm of rain a year, almost all of it between February and May, leaving a long dry season of sunny, windy days. This guide covers the climate, the best months to visit, where to stay and everything to do once you arrive.
Welcome to Jericoacoara
You reach Jericoacoara the hard way, which is part of the appeal. There is no paved road into the village; visitors fly into Fortaleza or the small regional airport, then ride the last stretch in a 4×4 across sand tracks and dunes. In return you get a settlement of sandy lanes, no street lights and a beach that ranks consistently among the best in Brazil. The rhythm of the day is simple: mornings at the freshwater lagoons, afternoons on the beach or under a kitesurf kite, and every evening on the Sunset Dune with the rest of the village.
Jericoacoara Weather at a Glance
Jericoacoara has a tropical climate with two clear halves. The rainy season runs February to May, peaking in March and April at 240 to 250mm a month, when short but heavy afternoon showers refill the lagoons and turn the dunes green. The dry season runs June to January, with September and October the driest months at about 5mm each. Highs range from 30°C (86°F) in the wetter months to 31°C (88°F) through the dry season, and lows only move between 22°C and 24°C (72°F to 75°F), so there is no cold season to avoid.
The defining feature is the wind. Trade winds blow most reliably from June to January and peak between September and November at 20 to 30 knots, which is why kitesurfers dominate the village in those months. The sea temperature stays at 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 82°F) year round, so no wetsuit is needed.
