Qingdao’s event calendar is anchored by the Qingdao International Beer Festival, one of the largest beer festivals in Asia, but the city also runs cherry blossom, ocean, and sailing festivals through the year. This guide, part of our Qingdao guide, lists the main dates, venues, and what to expect at each one, so you can time your trip around them.
Qingdao Events and Festivals: Qingdao International Beer Festival
Held every year since 1991, the Qingdao International Beer Festival runs for roughly three weeks from late July into mid-August. The main venue is the West Coast Beer City in the Huangdao district, a purpose-built site of beer tents from Tsingtao and international brewers, carnival rides, and live music. Entry to the grounds is usually free or a small charge, with beer and food bought by card or wristband inside. It draws millions of visitors, so book hotels in the where to stay in Qingdao districts early. July and August are also the wettest months, so the Qingdao weather by month table is worth a look before you pack.
Qingdao Events and Festivals: Spring (March to May)
The Qingdao Cherry Blossom Festival takes over Zhongshan Park from early to late April, when hundreds of cherry trees bloom along the park’s main avenue; entry is free, and weekends get crowded, so go on a weekday morning. Zhongshan Park sits in the Qingdao neighborhoods district of Shinan, an easy walk from the old town. The Qingdao Ocean Festival follows in late April, with seafood tastings, boat parades, and cultural performances along the waterfront. Labour Day on May 1 is a national holiday that fills the beaches and the old town, so avoid that weekend unless you enjoy crowds.
Qingdao Events and Festivals: Summer (June to August)
Beyond the beer festival, summer brings the Qingdao International Sailing Week and the Qingdao International Marine Festival, both usually held in July around the Olympic Sailing Center, with regattas, water sports demos, and fireworks over the bay. The Dragon Boat Festival (late May or June, depending on the lunar calendar) is marked with zongzi rice dumplings rather than big races in Qingdao. If you’re here in summer, pair an event with the things to do in Qingdao beach list.
Qingdao Events and Festivals: Autumn and Winter
National Day on October 1 kicks off a week-long Golden Week holiday that floods the city with domestic tourists, and the Huangdao side runs a beach music festival around the same time. In late October, the Qingdao International Fisheries Expo and seafood season peak, with local restaurants running crab and prawn specials. Winter is quiet, but the city sets up a lantern fair and ice-and-snow festival from late December through the Chinese New Year period (January or February), and the best time to visit Qingdao page explains why winter is otherwise a low-crowd, low-price window. For the practicalities of visiting during a holiday week, the Qingdao travel tips guide has you covered.
