Qingdao is a summer resort city, so the obvious answer is July and August for beaches, but the best time to visit depends on what you want. Late spring and September offer mild weather and fewer crowds, while the International Beer Festival in late summer is the city’s biggest single draw. This guide, part of our Qingdao travel guide, breaks down the best months for weather, prices, crowds, and specific events.
Best Time to Visit Qingdao: Late Spring (April to June)
April through June delivers the best combination of pleasant weather and manageable crowds. April averages 15°C (59°F) and hosts the Zhongshan Park cherry blossoms, while May reaches 20°C (68°F) with just 50mm of rain. June warms to 24°C (75°F) and is the last dry-ish month before the July deluge. Hotel rates are 30 to 40 percent lower than in July and August, and the beaches are open but not packed. The one downside is a sea-fog season that can grey out mornings from April into June. If you’d rather see where to base yourself, the Qingdao neighborhoods guide maps out each district.
Best Time to Visit Qingdao: September and October
September and October are the connoisseur’s pick. September still averages 25°C (77°F) and the sea holds 23°C (73°F), so you can swim through mid-September without the July-August crowds. October averages 19°C (66°F), with only 32mm of rain and clear skies, making it the best month for walking the old town and climbing Mount Lao. Chinese domestic tourism drops sharply after the first week of October, so the second half of October offers low prices and quiet sights. This is also a strong window for working through the things to do in Qingdao list without sweating through it.
Best Time to Visit Qingdao: For the Beer Festival (July to August)
If the Qingdao events and festivals scene is your focus, plan for the Qingdao International Beer Festival, which runs roughly late July through mid-August in the West Coast Beer City venue. This is peak summer: July averages 27°C (81°F) and 171mm of rain, August 28°C (82°F) and 151mm. Expect hot, humid afternoons, occasional heavy showers, and the year’s highest hotel prices, with rates doubling and top beachfront properties selling out a month ahead. Book lodging 4 to 6 weeks in advance if you’re coming for the festival.
Best Time to Visit Qingdao: When to Avoid
December to February is cold, windy, and quiet, with January averaging -3°C (27°F) overnight, and it’s only worth it if you want rock-bottom hotel prices and empty streets. The first week of October (National Day Golden Week) and the entire July-August school holiday are the most crowded and expensive windows. Chinese New Year, which lands in January or February, shuts many family-run restaurants and attractions for up to a week. The Qingdao weather by month page has the full numbers behind these seasonal swings.
Best Time to Visit Qingdao: Cheapest Months
The cheapest months are November, and January through March, when average room rates drop to a third of the summer peak. November averages 11°C (52°F), which is still fine for sightseeing if you dress for it, while January to March sits below 10°C (50°F). For where to find those cheaper rooms, see the where to stay in Qingdao guide, and for the practicalities of a budget trip, the Qingdao travel tips page covers money and transport.
