Fernando de Noronha’s event calendar is small but punchy: a famous New Year’s Eve, a world-class surf contest, a sailing regatta that crosses 300 nautical miles of open ocean, and local religious feasts. Most events cluster in the dry season, which makes timing easy. This guide lists what is on, when, and where. For the broader context, start at the main Fernando de Noronha page.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Réveillon
New Year’s Eve, or Réveillon, is the island’s biggest event of the year. Hotels and pousadas sell out months ahead and charge their highest rates, with minimum stays of five to seven nights around December 31. The celebration centers on fireworks over Praia do Cachorro and the village, plus beach parties that run until dawn. If you want in, book flights and lodging by September; the best time to visit guide warns about this peak period.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Surf Competitions at Cacimba do Padre
Cacimba do Padre hosts professional and amateur surf contests in the January-to-February window, when the swell is most consistent. The marquee event has been the Hang Loose Pro Contest, which draws a national field to the island’s most famous break. Spectating is free from the beach. The surf season overlaps with good weather described in the weather by month guide.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Carnaval
Carnaval falls in February or early March and on Noronha it is a relaxed, family affair compared to the mega-parties in Recife and Olinda on the mainland. Expect a small parade through Vila dos Remédios, blocos (street parties), and costume nights at the beach bars. It is also the start of the wetter season, so pack a rain jacket alongside your costume. Nearby attractions to fill the rest of your stay are in the things to do list.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Festa de São Pedro
On June 29 the island celebrates São Pedro, the patron saint of fishermen, with a procession, mass at the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios church, and a maritime procession of decorated fishing boats out of Porto de Santo Antônio. It is the most important local religious feast of the year and gives visitors a look at island tradition away from the beach resorts. The village and port areas are described in the neighborhoods guide.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Semana do Meio Ambiente
Environment Week, held around June 5, brings talks, beach cleanups, and school activities run by ICMBio and TAMAR. It is a low-key but genuinely useful week to visit if you are interested in marine conservation, since researchers open talks to the public. The TAMAR visitor center and Projeto Golfinho Rotador run free programming, and some trails get guided walks. Check the travel tips and FAQ page for permit details before arriving.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Refeno Regatta
The Regata Internacional Recife-Fernando de Noronha, or Refeno, is a sailing race that departs Recife in late September or early October and covers roughly 300 nautical miles to the island. The finish line fills Porto de Santo Antônio with yachts for a few days, and there are arrival parties and prize ceremonies in the village. It is a great time for sailing fans, though rooms book up fast. Sailors and spectators alike can find lodging advice in the where to stay guide.
Fernando de Noronha Events: Music and Gastronomy Festivals
In October the island hosts the Noronha Music Festival, a multi-day program of Brazilian and Latin acts with stages around Vila dos Remédios. In November the Festival Gastronômico de Noronha brings mainland chefs to island restaurants for tasting menus and cooking demos. Both run in the dry season, so they pair well with beach days. Ticket prices vary by year; check local listings once you arrive.
