Humpback whales migrate past Cape Byron from June to November, with the peak viewing window in July and August on the northbound journey and September to November on the return south with calves. Autumn (March to May) delivers the most consistent south and southeast swells with offshore winds. The water stays warm at 24-26°C and crowds thin after school holidays end in late January. Winter (June to August) brings bigger swells suited to experienced surfers, though water temperatures drop to 21°C requiring a 3/2mm wetsuit. The cheapest months are May, June, and August when accommodation rates drop 30-40% from summer peaks. Flights to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) and Gold Coast Airport (OOL) are cheapest outside Australian school holidays. Specifically avoid: Christmas to late January (summer school holidays), the two weeks around Easter, and the July school holiday period. Splendour in the Grass (July) and Bluesfest (Easter) spike demand in their respective weeks, so book 3+ months ahead if attending either festival.

Easter weekend hosts Bluesfest, Australia’s premier blues and roots festival at Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, 11km north of town. July brings Splendour in the Grass, a three-day indie music festival at North Byron Parklands. The Byron Bay Surf Festival runs in February. The Byron Writers Festival takes place in August. For food lovers, the Sample Food Festival hits in September. Book accommodation 4-6 months ahead for Bluesfest and Splendour: the town sells out completely.
