Summer days average 28°C (82°F) with overnight lows around 21°C (70°F). This is the wettest season with 140-175mm of rain per month, typically from afternoon thunderstorms that clear within an hour. Humidity sits at 70-75%. The sea hits 27°C in February, perfect for swimming and surfing. Expect 7-8 hours of sunshine daily. January and February bring the warmest water temperatures and the most consistent northeast swells for surfers. Byron Bay Weather by Month: Autumn (March to May)
March still sees 190mm of rain and daytime highs of 27°C, but humidity starts dropping through April. By May, temperatures settle to 23°C highs and 14°C lows with about 140mm of rain. Sea temperatures cool from 26°C to 24°C. This is prime surf season with consistent south swells and fewer crowds than summer. The water stays warm enough for board shorts through May. Byron Bay Weather by Month: Winter (June to August)
Winter is the driest season with only 50-120mm of rain per month. Daytime highs reach 20-21°C (68-70°F) and nights drop to 10-12°C (50-54°F), cold enough for a jacket after sunset. July is the coolest month. Sea temperatures dip to 21°C, still swimmable with a light wetsuit for longer sessions. This is whale watching season: humpback whales migrate past Cape Byron from June through November. Byron Bay Weather by Month: Spring (September to November)
Spring starts dry with September averaging just 45mm of rain, the lowest of the year. Temperatures climb from 24°C in September to 26°C in November. Nights warm from 14°C to 18°C. Sea temperatures rise from 22°C to 24°C. October and November offer some of the best all-round conditions: warm but not hot, mostly dry with 90-100mm of rain, 8 hours of daily sunshine, and whale watching still active through November. Jacaranda trees bloom in October and November, turning streets purple. The Byron Bay Surf Festival runs in February but spring swells are consistent for surfing.
