Mérida has a tropical wet and dry climate (Köppen Aw) with two distinct seasons. Average highs range from 30°C (86°F) in December to 36°C (97°F) in May, with overnight lows between 18°C (64°F) and 24°C (75°F). The city receives about 1,000mm (39 inches) of rain annually, nearly all of it falling between June and October. For more details, see our best time to visit Mérida guide. Humidity stays above 70% year-round, making the heat feel more intense than the thermometer suggests.

Mérida Weather by Month: Dry Season (November to May)
November to February: The Most Comfortable Months
These four months offer Mérida’s most pleasant weather. Daytime highs hover around 30 to 31°C (86 to 88°F) with overnight lows dropping to 18°C (64°F), cool enough that locals sometimes wear light jackets in the evening. Rainfall is minimal at 25 to 45mm per month across 3 to 6 rain days. January is the coolest month and also the driest. By February, temperatures begin creeping up but humidity stays manageable. For more details, see our Mérida events and festivals guide. This is the peak tourist season, and hotel prices reflect it.
March to May: The Hottest Months
March marks the beginning of the hot season. By April and May, daytime highs regularly reach 35 to 36°C (95 to 97°F) with nighttime lows only dropping to 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F). Humidity is at its lowest annual point (67 to 70%), so the heat is dry rather than sticky. April is typically the driest month with only 3 rain days. May brings the first rains of the wet season, with precipitation jumping to 80mm across 7 days. For more details, see our best neighborhoods in Mérida guide. The combination of intense heat and increasing humidity makes May one of the most uncomfortable months for outdoor activities after about 11 am.
Mérida Weather by Month: Wet Season (June to October)
June through October is Mérida’s rainy season, driven by the North American Monsoon and tropical wave activity. Rain typically arrives as heavy afternoon downpours lasting 1 to 2 hours rather than all-day drizzle. Mornings are usually sunny and hot, with clouds building by early afternoon and thunderstorms rolling through between 3 pm and 6 pm. Streets flood quickly because Mérida sits on a flat limestone plain with limited drainage. For more details, see our where to stay in Mérida guide. September is the wettest month at 180mm across 16 rain days.
Hurricane Season: June to November
Mérida is about 35km (22 miles) inland from the Gulf of Mexico, so it is better protected from hurricanes than coastal cities like Cancun or Progreso. The Yucatán Peninsula has seen direct hurricane landfalls, but Mérida itself typically experiences heavy rain and gusty winds from outer bands rather than the eyewall. The most active period is August through October. For more details, see our Mérida travel tips guide. Isidore (2002) was the last major hurricane to cause significant damage in Mérida.
Mérida Weather by Month: What to Pack
Lightweight cotton and linen clothing is essential year-round. Bring a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for sun protection. A compact umbrella or lightweight rain jacket is useful from June through October for afternoon storms. Insect repellent with DEET is recommended during the wet season when mosquitoes are most active. If visiting between December and February, pack one light sweater or long-sleeve shirt for air-conditioned restaurants and cooler evenings. For more details, see our Mérida travel guide guide. Sunscreen with SPF 50+ is essential regardless of season; the Yucatán sun is intense even on overcast days.
