Mérida is the cultural capital of the Yucatán Peninsula, a city of pastel colonial mansions, ancient Maya roots, and some of the best regional food in Mexico. Founded in 1542 on the ruins of the Maya city of T’ho, it holds the largest historic center on the peninsula and a climate defined by two seasons: dry and hot from November to May, rainy and humid from June to October. Daytime highs range from 30°C (86°F) in January to 36°C (97°F) in May, with overnight lows between 18°C (64°F) and 24°C (75°F). Annual rainfall totals roughly 1,000mm (39 inches), almost all of it concentrated between June and October.

Welcome to Mérida

Most visitors arrive through Mérida International Airport (MID), a compact single-terminal facility just 7 km southwest of the city center. From there, it is a MXN$270 (US$15) taxi ride to the centro, where the city reveals itself as a grid of numbered streets radiating from the Plaza Grande. The cathedral of San Ildefonso (1598) is the oldest on mainland North America. Three blocks away, the Paseo de Montejo stretches north like a tropical Champs Elysees, lined with the mansions of 19th-century henequen barons. Within an hour’s drive are Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and dozens of cenotes, making Mérida an ideal base for exploring the peninsula.

Where Is Mérida?

Mérida sits in the northwest of the Yucatán Peninsula, about 35 km (22 miles) inland from the Gulf of Mexico port of Progreso. It is the capital of Yucatán state and the peninsula’s largest city with a metro population of roughly 1.2 million. The city lies on a flat limestone plain at an elevation of just 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level. There are no rivers on the surface; water drains through the porous limestone into a vast underground aquifer that also created the region’s thousands of cenotes (sinkholes). The flat terrain and limestone bedrock make Mérida feel hotter than coastal cities because there is no sea breeze to cool the urban core.

What Influences Mérida’s Weather

Three main factors shape Mérida’s climate. First, its latitude (21°N) puts it in the tropical zone with high solar radiation year-round. Second, the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea supply the moisture that fuels the wet season and hurricane activity. Third, the city’s inland position, 35 km from the coast, means it misses the moderating sea breezes that keep Cancun and Progreso slightly cooler. During the dry season, high-pressure systems over the Gulf suppress rainfall. During the wet season, the North American Monsoon draws moisture from both the Pacific and the Gulf, producing the daily afternoon thunderstorms that are a defining feature of Yucatán summers.
