Potenza Weather Overview: Four Distinct Seasons

Potenza has four clearly defined seasons driven by its Apennine location. Winters (December to February) are cold with daytime highs of 10 to 13 degrees C (50 to 55 F) and overnight lows dropping to 2 to 4 C (36 to 39 F). Snow is common: the city averages 14 cm per year, with February seeing the most at 6.9 cm. January averages 4.8 cm of snow. Spring (March to May) warms gradually from 14 C (57 F) in March to 21 C (70 F) in May, though March is the wettest month at 89 mm. Summer (June to August) brings the best weather: July and August peak at 28 to 30 C (82 to 86 F) with overnight lows of 19 to 21 C (66 to 70 F). July is the driest month at just 28 mm. Autumn (September to November) cools from 24 C (75 F) in September to 17 C (63 F) in November, with rainfall picking up again: November gets 68 mm. Potenza Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

Winter in Potenza is cold and often snowy. January highs reach 11 C (52 F) and February is the coldest month at 10 C (50 F). Nighttime temperatures routinely drop to 2-4 C (36-39 F), and sub-zero nights are common in the city centre due to the 819-metre elevation. Snow falls most heavily in February (6.9 cm) and January (4.8 cm). The nearby Sellata-Pierfaone ski area, 20 km south of Potenza, typically operates from late December through March with 20 km of slopes between 1,350 and 1,700 metres. December and January each see about 17-18 rainy days, so waterproof footwear is essential. Sunshine averages 4-5 hours per day in winter.

Potenza Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

Spring arrives slowly at Potenza’s elevation. March still feels winter-like with highs of 14 C (57 F) and 1.8 cm of snow possible. It is also the wettest month at 89 mm across 17 rainy days. By April, highs reach 18 C (64 F) and the landscape turns green across the Lucanian Apennines. May brings the first consistently warm days at 21 C (70 F), though it is the second-wettest month at 71 mm. There is no snow from May through October. July is the driest month at just 28 mm over 7 rainy days, making it ideal for outdoor exploration of the Basilicata region. August is slightly wetter at 41 mm over 8 days. The city’s altitude means summer heat is rarely oppressive: even on the hottest August afternoons, the temperature typically stays below 35 C (95 F). Most locals leave Potenza in August for coastal holidays, so the city can feel quiet. Sunshine averages 10-11 hours per day in July.

Potenza Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)

September remains pleasant at 24 C (75 F) with comfortable overnight lows of 17 C (63 F) and moderate rainfall of 50 mm. October cools to 21 C (70 F) and is one of the driest months at just 29 mm, making early to mid-October an excellent window for hiking in the Lucanian Dolomites and Pollino National Park. November sees a sharp drop to 17 C (63 F) highs and 68 mm of rain over 16 days. The first frost typically arrives in late November. By December, winter conditions return with snowfall possible from the second half of the month.
