Events and Festivals in Potenza: San Gerardo, Carnival and Seasonal Celebrations

Italy Basilicata Potenza

Potenza’s event calendar is anchored by the Feast of San Gerardo, the patron saint celebration that transforms the city each May. Beyond this flagship event, Basilicata’s capital hosts several smaller festivals tied to the agricultural calendar and religious traditions. Most events are concentrated between May and September. Events and Festivals in Potenza: Major Annual Celebrations

Festa di San Gerardo (Feast of Saint Gerard)

Potenza’s most important event takes place on May 30 each year, celebrating the city’s patron saint who died in 1119. The centrepiece is the Processione dei Turchi (Procession of the Turks), a costumed parade in which participants dressed as Turkish warriors accompany the statue of San Gerardo through the streets. The tradition dates to the 16th century and commemorates a legendary repelling of a Saracen attack. The procession starts at the Cathedral of San Gerardo around 18:00 and winds through Via Pretoria and the historic centre. The day before (May 29) features the Sfilata del Santo, a quieter candlelit procession. Hotels in Potenza book up two to three weeks ahead for this period. The entire week leading up to May 30 features street food stalls, live music in Piazza Matteotti, and a small funfair near the Villa Comunale. Potenza Citta Verticale (Vertical City Festival)

Held over a weekend in late September, this urban culture festival celebrates Potenza’s unique vertical geography. Events include guided walks up the city’s famous staircases and escalators, photography exhibitions documenting the city’s multi-level architecture, and open-air concerts on the terraces and belvederes overlooking the Basento valley. The festival was launched in 2018 and has grown each year. Most events are free. The programme is published in early September on the Comune di Potenza website.

Carnevale Potentino

Potenza’s Carnival runs from the weekend before Shrove Tuesday through to Martedi Grasso (Fat Tuesday), typically in February. The main parade takes place on the Sunday afternoon along Via Pretoria and Piazza Mario Pagano, with floats, masks, and traditional Basilicata carnival figures. The nearby town of Satriano di Lucania (30 km south) holds one of Italy’s most unusual carnival events: La Foresta che Cammina (The Walking Forest), where participants dressed as trees parade silently through the streets. This takes place on the Friday and Saturday before Shrove Tuesday.

Events and Festivals in Potenza: Seasonal and Cultural Events

Estate Potentina (Potenza Summer)

From late June through early September, the city runs a programme of outdoor events under the Estate Potentina banner. This includes open-air film screenings in the Villa Comunale Santa Maria (free, starts around 21:00), jazz concerts in Piazza Matteotti, and theatre performances at the Teatro Francesco Stabile. The programme is published in mid-June. The Teatro Stabile, built in 1856 and renovated in the 1990s, is Potenza’s main theatre venue on Via Teatro Stabile. Tickets for theatre performances range from 10 to 25 EUR.

Sagra della Castagna (Chestnut Festival)

While not in Potenza itself, the Sagra della Castagna in the nearby village of Muro Lucano (40 km north, 40-minute drive on the SS7) takes place on the last weekend of October. This chestnut festival celebrates the autumn harvest with roasted chestnuts, local wine, and folk music. It is an authentic food event with zero tourist packaging. Chestnuts from the Vulture-Melfese area hold IGP status (Protected Geographical Indication). The festival runs from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. Free entry; food and drink are pay-as-you-go.
