São Jorge’s elongated shape (54 km long, 6 km wide) and rugged topography mean a car is all but mandatory for independent exploration. The fajã access roads are steep, narrow, and often unpaved. Here is how to get around São Jorge.
Getting Around São Jorge: Rental Cars
Rental car is the only practical option. Ilha Verde operates at São Jorge Airport (SJZ). Rates start at €40-60 per day. The main ridge road (ER1-1) is paved and well-maintained, with spectacular views of Pico across the channel on clear days. The roads down to the fajãs are the challenge: steep gradients (up to 20%), sharp hairpins, single-lane sections, and unpaved surfaces on some north-coast access tracks. First gear and steady nerves are your friends. Allow 30 minutes to drive from the ridge to a fajã, even if the distance is only 4-5 km. Fill the tank in Velas or Calheta: there are no other petrol stations. Automatic cars are extremely limited; book early if you need one. A 4×4 is helpful but not essential for the main fajã access roads in dry weather; after rain, a higher-clearance vehicle provides peace of mind on unpaved tracks.
Getting Around São Jorge: Taxis
Taxis operate in Velas and Calheta. Sample fares from Velas: to the Santo Cristo trailhead (Serra do Topo) €25-30, to Fajã do Ouvidor €15-20, to São Jorge Airport €25-30. For a day of exploring fajãs, negotiate a half-day rate with a driver (€70-90 for 4 hours). For the Santo Cristo hike, arrange for the taxi to pick you up at a set time at the trailhead; there is no taxi rank in the mountains. Rural pickups require a phone call. Tipping is not expected but rounding up is appreciated.
Getting Around São Jorge: Public Buses
São Jorge has a limited bus service along the main ridge road connecting Velas to Calheta and the airport, with 1-3 departures per day. No bus serves any of the fajã access roads or the Santo Cristo trailhead. The bus is designed for local commutes and is not a practical option for tourism unless you are patient and plan around a single destination for the day.
