Things to Do in São Jorge

Portugal › Azores › São Jorge

São Jorge is the Azores for the active traveller. There are no major museums or monument attractions here: the island’s draw is its fajãs, accessible only by foot or by winding cliff roads, each a pocket world of pasture, lagoon, or surf break. Here are the best things to do in São Jorge.

Things to Do in São Jorge: The Fajãs

Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo

The most famous fajã in the Azores and one of only two on São Jorge accessible only by foot (or quad bike). The trail descends from the clifftop near Serra do Topo, dropping 400 metres in about 1 hour through lush vegetation with views of the Atlantic and the fajã below. At the bottom, you find a tidal lagoon famous for its clams (amêijoas), a small chapel, and a handful of stone houses , one of which serves as a seasonal cafe. The lagoon is a protected nature reserve. You can also walk from here to the neighbouring Fajã dos Cubres, a 30-minute coastal path. The climb back up is the same route and takes about 1.5 hours. Bring water and food: the cafe is not always open. The trail is manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness; wear sturdy shoes.

Fajã do Ouvidor

One of the most accessible fajãs, reached by a paved road that winds down the cliff north of Velas. The main attraction is the natural swimming pool (Poça Simão Dias), a lava-rock basin filled by the tide, with a ladder and small sunbathing area. A snack bar operates in summer. The fajã itself is a patchwork of small fields and stone houses. The road down is steep and narrow; drive slowly.

Fajã de São João

The surf hub of São Jorge on the north coast, reached by a winding paved road. The fajã has a cluster of restored stone houses, a small harbour, and a reliable surf break that works best on winter swells. In summer, the natural pools are good for swimming. The cafe and guesthouse here are the social centre of São Jorge’s small surf community. Even if you do not surf, the setting is spectacular: a green plateau wedged between black cliffs and blue ocean.

Trilho das Fajãs (Fajãs Trail)

The official long-distance trail runs the length of São Jorge’s south coast, connecting Fajã das Almas in the west to Fajã dos Vimes in the east. The full route takes 2-3 days with overnight stops in the fajãs. The most popular section is the Santo Cristo loop described above. The trail is well-marked with red and yellow stripes. It is exposed in places with steep drop-offs; vertigo sufferers should research sections in advance. The trail passes through several fajãs with cafes where you can refill water and eat.

Things to Do in São Jorge: Culture and Food

Queijo São Jorge , Cheese Factory Tour

The União de Cooperativas Agrícolas in Beira, 5 km from Velas, is the main São Jorge cheese production facility. Guided tours run Monday to Friday during working hours (free, about 30 minutes) and show the cheese-making process from milk intake to the ageing rooms where wheels mature for 3 to 12 months. The tasting at the end includes fresh and aged cheeses. The shop sells vacuum-packed wheels to take home (approximately €10-15/kg). São Jorge cheese is a DOP product: it can only be made on this island using milk from São Jorge cows. The slightly spicy, firm texture is the result of the island’s grass, the volcanic soil, and the traditional rennet recipe.

Velas Town and Port

Velas is São Jorge’s main town and ferry port, a pretty settlement of whitewashed buildings and basalt cobblestone streets wrapped around a small harbour. The Igreja Matriz de Velas (main church) has a carved wooden ceiling and 17th-century azulejos. The Jardim da Praça da República is a good spot for a coffee and people-watching. The harbourfront has a natural swimming pool (Portinho da Vila) and a walkway to the viewpoint at Morro de Velas. The ferry terminal connects to Pico and Faial.
