Understanding the microclimate difference between the ridge and the fajãs is key to planning your days.

January is the wettest month with 170mm of rain over 19 days. Coastal highs reach 16°C (61°F) with lows of 11°C (52°F). The fajãs, protected by the cliffs, can feel several degrees warmer on sunny days. Sea temperatures sit at 17°C (63°F). The high central plateau (800-1,000m) is frequently cloud-covered and windswept. The coastal hiking trails connecting the fajãs are passable between downpours. Velas and Calheta are quiet; some restaurants reduce hours in January. The São Jorge cheese dairies (União de Cooperativas in Beira) offer tastings year-round.

February brings 150mm of rain over 17 days. Highs hold at 16°C (61°F) and lows at 11°C (52°F). Sea temperatures dip to 16°C (61°F), their annual minimum. The fajãs begin to show the first signs of spring, with wildflowers appearing on the sheltered south-coast plateaus. Surfers target the north coast where winter swells produce consistent breaks at Fajã de São João. Walking conditions on the official Fajãs Trail (Trilho das Fajãs) are muddy but doable with waterproof boots. The island is at its quietest.

Highs rise to 18°C (64°F), lows to 12°C (54°F), and rain drops to 90mm. The fajãs are at their most beautiful with spring wildflowers and the surrounding cliffs draped in green. Hiking conditions are excellent. The baleen whale migration passes through São Jorge’s waters, and whale-watching trips from Velas begin their season. Sea temperatures remain at 16°C (61°F). The sunrise from the central plateau, with Pico Mountain silhouetted across the channel, is worth the early start.

One of the best months for hiking. Highs reach 20°C (68°F), lows 14°C (57°F), and rain drops to 70mm. The fajãs are warm and the plateau trails are dry. The Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo trail (the most famous hike on the island) is in prime condition. Whale watching is strong. The Festas do Divino Espírito Santo continue with the largest celebrations in Velas and Calheta. Sea temperatures warm to 17°C (63°F). Sunshine averages 6 hours daily.
São Jorge Weather in June
Summer begins. Highs reach 22°C (72°F) with lows of 16°C (61°F) and just 60mm of rain. The Festa de São João in Calheta (June 24) is one of the island’s biggest celebrations. Hiking is superb: warm but not hot, dry trails, and long daylight hours. Sea temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F), and the natural pools at Fajã do Ouvidor and Simão Dias become swimmable. The surf season winds down as summer brings smaller swells.
São Jorge Weather in July
The driest month at 50mm of rain. Highs reach 24°C (75°F), lows 18°C (64°F). Sea temperatures warm to 21°C (70°F). The natural swimming pools are in prime condition. The Semana Cultural das Velas fills the town with concerts, exhibitions, and food stalls in July. Hiking the fajãs is excellent, though midday heat on the exposed sections of trail can be intense , start early. The island is busier than spring but still quiet compared to São Miguel or Faial.
São Jorge Weather in August
The warmest month with highs of 25°C (77°F) and lows of 19°C (66°F). Rainfall is 60mm. Sea temperatures peak at 23°C (73°F). The Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and Fajã do Ouvidor natural pools are at their warmest. Accommodation should be booked 1-2 months ahead for August, especially in Velas. Surfers find smaller but fun waves on the north coast fajãs. The hiking trails are busy by São Jorge standards. The cheese dairies are in full summer production.
São Jorge Weather in September
An outstanding month. Highs hold at 24°C (75°F), lows at 18°C (64°F), with 80mm of rain. Sea temperatures stay warm at 22°C (72°F). The summer crowds thin, hiking conditions are excellent, and the fajãs’ microclimates are at their most pleasant. The cheese aged from spring milk is at its peak. September may be the single best month for a São Jorge hiking trip.

October delivers warm temperatures of 22°C (72°F) with 120mm of rain. The first half of October often extends summer conditions. Sea temperatures hold at 21°C (70°F). The surf season begins to build on the north coast. Hiking remains good but trails can be muddy after rain. The fajã access roads can become slippery. The island quiets down significantly after mid-October.

November is the transition to winter. Highs drop to 19°C (66°F), lows to 14°C (57°F), and rain surges to 150mm. Storm systems begin arriving from the Atlantic, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Some fajã access roads may close after heavy rainfall. The high plateau is frequently wind-lashed and cloud-covered. Surfers return in force as the north coast swells build to winter levels. The island enters its quietest season.

December brings 160mm of rain, short days (4 hours of sun), and highs of 17°C (63°F). The fajãs remain protected pockets of calm, but the upper island is in full winter mode. Christmas in Velas and Calheta is traditional and quiet. The cheese dairies welcome visitors for tastings , the aged São Jorge cheese, matured 7-12 months, is at its finest. Hiking is limited to lower coastal trails; the plateau trails are closed or impassable.
