September is the single best month on Santa Maria. Accommodation is easier to find and 15-20% cheaper than August. Whale watching is still strong. If September does not work, June is the runner-up: 23°C (73°F), low rain, excellent whale watching, and the island is lively without being packed. July and August deliver the warmest weather and the best beach conditions but require advance booking.

The beach window on Santa Maria runs from late June through early October, with the sweet spot in July, August, and September. Praia Formosa, the island’s signature white sand beach, has water temperatures of 22-24°C (72-75°F) in these months. August is the warmest but busiest. September offers the same warm water with far fewer people. The smaller beaches like Praia dos Lobos and São Lourenço are sheltered and warm up faster.
