Hiking trails on the island’s eastern end stay dry and accessible. Vila do Porto is quiet; restaurants and cafes keep regular hours unlike smaller islands that close for part of winter.

The island’s almond trees begin to flower, and the first signs of spring appear in the meadows of the western plateau. Carnaval falls in February most years, bringing parades and dances to Vila do Porto.

The meadows are a riot of wildflowers, and whale-watching enters its peak as blue and fin whales migrate through. The Festas do Divino EspÃrito Santo begin in village parishes. Beaches are still quiet; the water is cool but the sand is warm enough for sunbathing.

The Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, the island’s most important religious event, takes place in Vila do Porto and draws visitors from across the Azores. The island is busy with Azorean holidaymakers, but still far from crowded by Mediterranean standards. Accommodation should be booked 1-2 months ahead for the second half of July.

The Mare de Agosto music festival transforms Praia Formosa into a concert venue for three days. Sunshine runs 8-9 hours daily. This is the busiest month: for accommodation, book 2-3 months ahead. All restaurants and services operate at full summer hours.

A near-perfect month. Highs hold at 25°C (77°F), lows at 19°C (66°F), with 50mm of rain over 8 days. Sea temperatures hit their annual peak at 24°C (75°F), the warmest sea in the Azores. The summer crowds thin after the first week, and accommodation becomes easier to find. Whale watching remains strong. Hiking and beach days can coexist in the same afternoon. September might be the single best month to visit Santa Maria.

Autumn brings highs of 23°C (73°F), lows of 17°C (63°F), and 80mm of rain over 12 days. Sea temperatures stay warm at 22°C (72°F) into mid-October. The first half of the month often delivers extended summer-like conditions. By late October, Atlantic fronts become more frequent. The tourist infrastructure begins to wind down, though Vila do Porto’s restaurants stay open. A good month for surfers as autumn swells arrive on the north coast.
