Faial’s event calendar revolves around the sea, the saints, and the summer. The island’s biggest festival, Semana do Mar, transforms Horta’s waterfront for a full week in August, while the traditional Festas do Divino Espírito Santo bring communal meals and processions to villages throughout spring and early summer. Here is what is on and when.
Faial Events: Semana do Mar (Sea Week)
The biggest event on Faial’s calendar, held in Horta during the first full week of August. Semana do Mar is a maritime festival with sailing regattas, whale-watching boat parades, live music on the waterfront stage, traditional Azorean food stalls, and a craft market along Avenida 25 de Abril. The regatta from Horta to Madalena (Pico) and back is the centrepiece sporting event. Concerts run nightly and feature both local Azorean artists and mainland Portuguese acts. The festival is free to attend; food and drink are pay-as-you-go. Accommodation in Horta sells out months in advance for this week. If you plan to attend, book by April.
Faial Events: Festa de São João
Held on June 23-24, São João is Faial’s largest religious festival, celebrating John the Baptist, the island’s patron saint. The main events are in Horta: a candlelit procession on the evening of June 23, a solemn mass at Igreja Matriz do Santíssimo Salvador on the morning of June 24, and street parties with grilled sardines, live music, and dancing. The arraial (street party) atmosphere is family-friendly and runs late into the night. Smaller celebrations happen simultaneously in Cedros and other village parishes.
Faial Events: Festas do Divino Espírito Santo
The Feast of the Holy Spirit is the most deeply Azorean of celebrations, dating back to the 14th century. On Faial, these take place in virtually every village parish between May and July. The format is consistent: a Sunday mass, a procession with the silver crown of the Holy Spirit, and the distribution of sopas do Espírito Santo (bread soup with meat and mint) to the entire community. Visitors are welcome to participate and eat. The celebrations rotate between parishes; the Horta parish celebration is usually in late May or early June. Ask at the Horta tourist office for the current year’s schedule.
Faial Events: Festa de Santa Cecília
A smaller, charming festival in the village of Cedros on Faial’s north coast, held around November 22. The celebration includes a procession, local band performances, and food stalls. It is less touristy than summer events and offers a glimpse of village life on Faial as winter arrives. The north coast scenery adds to the experience, with dramatic wave-watching between festival events.
Faial Events: Regata de Botes Baleeiros (Whaling Boat Regatta)
Throughout summer (June to September), the traditional wooden whaling boats (botes baleeiros) that once hunted sperm whales are now raced in regattas between villages and islands. On Faial, regattas happen in the harbour of Horta and off Porto Pim. The boats, crewed by teams of seven rowers and a helmsman, are beautifully restored and the races are surprisingly competitive. Dates are announced by the Clube Naval da Horta; events are free to watch from the harbour walls.
