The Gulf Stream moderates winter temperatures while summer warmth is tempered by the surrounding Atlantic. What follows is a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect, from Capelinhos to the Caldeira.
Faial Weather in January
January is mid-winter in Faial with average highs of 16°C (61°F) and lows of 11°C (52°F). Rain falls on roughly 18 days, totalling 140mm, with Atlantic fronts sweeping through every few days. Sea temperatures sit at 17°C (63°F). The Caldeira rim trail is often cloud-shrouded, but the lower coastal paths around Horta remain walkable between showers. Horta Marina is at its quietest, and cafe terraces stay open but are rarely full. Pack a waterproof jacket and layers: the wind can make 16°C feel closer to 10°C on exposed headlands.
Faial Weather in February
February is similar to January but with slightly more rain at 130mm over 16 wet days. Highs hold at 16°C (61°F) and lows at 11°C (52°F). Sea temperatures dip to 16°C (61°F), their lowest of the year. The hydrangeas are bare sticks, but camellias and azaleas begin to bloom. Whale-watching boats start running in late February as sperm whales are present year-round in Azorean waters. The Festa de São João, Faial’s largest religious festival, is in June, so February is event-free and quiet.
Faial Weather in March
Spring begins tentatively. Highs reach 17°C (63°F) and lows climb to 12°C (54°F), with 110mm of rain over 15 days. Sea temperatures stay at 16°C (61°F). Sunshine increases to about 5 hours per day. The first baleen whales appear on their northward migration, and whale-watching trips start in earnest. Hiking trails begin to dry out, though the Caldeira rim can still be muddy. The Divino EspÃrito Santo celebrations begin across the island’s villages.
Faial Weather in April
April brings notably better weather. Daytime highs reach 18°C (64°F), lows 12°C (54°F), and rain drops to 80mm over 13 days. The hydrangeas start producing their first leaves, and wildflowers carpet the caldera slopes. Whale watching enters peak season as blue, fin, and sei whales migrate through. Hiking conditions are excellent: trails are dry, temperatures are comfortable for walking, and the summer crowds haven’t arrived. The Caldeira rim offers clear views on roughly half of April days.
Faial Weather in May
One of Faial’s finest months. Highs reach 20°C (68°F), lows 14°C (57°F), and rainfall drops to 60mm over 11 days. Sea temperatures warm to 17°C (63°F). The first hydrangea buds appear, hinting at the blue explosion to come. Whale watching is at its absolute peak. Hiking the Caldeira is perfect: clear skies, mild temperatures, and the lush green of spring. The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre is accessible without the summer heat. Sunshine averages 6-7 hours per day.
Faial Weather in June
Summer begins properly. Highs reach 22°C (72°F), lows 16°C (61°F), and rain drops to 40mm over 9 days. Sea temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F), swimmable for the brave but still cool. The hydrangeas begin to bloom in earnest, transforming roadsides and field boundaries into walls of blue. The Festa de São João on June 24 fills Horta with processions, music, and food stalls. Sunshine averages 7 hours daily. Accommodation rates are still in shoulder season before the August peak.
Faial Weather in July
July is warm and relatively dry. Highs reach 24°C (75°F), lows 18°C (64°F), and rain totals just 30mm over 7 days , the driest month. Sea temperatures warm to 21°C (70°F), and swimming becomes comfortable. The hydrangeas are in full bloom, and the island is at its most photogenic. Sunshine averages 7-8 hours daily. Hiking, whale watching, and sailing are all in peak conditions. Hotels begin to fill, and the marina buzzes with transatlantic yachts.
Faial Weather in August
The warmest month with highs of 25°C (77°F) and lows of 19°C (66°F). Rainfall increases slightly to 50mm over 9 days, often as short, sharp showers that clear quickly. Sea temperatures peak at 23°C (73°F). The Semana do Mar (Sea Week) in early August is the island’s biggest festival, with regattas, concerts, and street food filling Horta’s waterfront for a full week. Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead. The Caldeira hike is best done early morning to avoid midday heat and afternoon cloud.

The summer crowds thin after the first week, and accommodation rates drop. Whale watching remains excellent as sperm whales are abundant. Hiking conditions are superb with warm days and cooler mornings. The hydrangeas fade by late September, but the weather is arguably better than August for outdoor activities.

Autumn arrives with highs of 22°C (72°F), lows of 16°C (61°F), and rain increasing to 110mm over 14 days. Sea temperatures hold at 21°C (70°F). October can deliver extended spells of settled weather, or it can turn stormy , it varies year to year. The first half of October is often excellent for hiking and whale watching. The Horta Marina empties as the transatlantic sailing season winds down. Hotel rates drop to low-season levels.
