Düsseldorf Events and Festivals Calendar
Karneval (Carnival) – February or March, Peak on Rosenmontag
Düsseldorf Karneval is the city’s biggest annual event, the ‘fifth season’ that officially begins on November 11 at 11:11 and peaks during the week before Ash Wednesday. The Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) parade on the Monday before Ash Wednesday is the main event: a 6km procession through the city center with 70+ floats, marching bands, and costumed groups throwing candy (Kamelle) to the crowd of up to 1 million spectators. The parade starts at 12:00 near the main station and proceeds through the city center. The Altstadt fills with costumed revelers from Thursday (Altweiber) through Tuesday. Hotels book out months in advance; reserve accommodation by November for the following February/March. Most shops and offices close on Rosenmontag.
Japan Day (Japan-Tag) – Late May or Early June, 1 Day
Japan Day celebrates Düsseldorf’s Japanese community of 8,400, the third-largest in Europe. The main event is a 30-minute fireworks display over the Rhine at 23:00, choreographed to Japanese and German music, that draws 600,000 spectators to the riverbanks. The daytime program at the Burgplatz and Rheinpark includes martial arts demonstrations, taiko drumming, cosplay contests, Japanese food stalls, and cultural workshops. The event is free. The fireworks are best viewed from the Oberkassel side of the Rhine (reachable via the Oberkasseler Bridge on foot). Arrive by 21:00 to secure a viewing spot.
Größte Kirmes am Rhein (Rhine Fair) – Mid-July, 10 Days
The Rhine Fair is one of Germany’s largest funfairs with over 200 rides, games, and food stalls spread across the Oberkassel Rhine meadows. The fair draws 4 million visitors over 10 days. The Friday night closing fireworks over the Rhine at 22:45 are a highlight. Entry is free; ride prices range from 3-8 EUR. The fairground is on the Oberkassel side of the Rhine, a 15-minute walk from the Altstadt across the Oberkasseler Bridge.
Düsseldorf Festival – September, 2 Weeks
The Düsseldorf Festival programs contemporary theatre, dance, and performance art at venues across the city including the Schauspielhaus, the Tanzhaus NRW, and outdoor spaces along the Rhine. The program emphasizes international avant-garde work. Most performances are in German or non-verbal. Ticket prices range from 10-35 EUR. The full program is released in July.
Christmas Markets – Late November Through December 23
Düsseldorf’s Christmas markets spread across seven locations in the city center. The main market on Marktplatz and Burgplatz in front of the Rathaus features traditional wooden chalets and a carousel. The Sternchenmarkt on the Stadtbrückchen canal has a more romantic atmosphere with fairy lights reflected in the water. The Kö-Bogen market near the luxury shopping district offers designer crafts. All markets serve Glühwein (mulled wine, 4-5 EUR plus 3 EUR cup deposit), Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), and grilled sausages. Markets open daily 11:00-20:00 (until 21:00 Fridays and Saturdays).
