Best Time to Visit Sapporo: Seasonal Guide

February: The Sapporo Snow Festival Window

Early February is the peak winter tourism period, centered on the Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) during the first full week of February. Temperatures average -1°C to -7°C (30°F to 19°F) with fresh snowfall of 137cm during the month. The festival’s massive snow and ice sculptures in Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome draw 2 million visitors over 7 days. Hotel prices spike by 80% to 200% during the festival and sell out 3 to 4 months ahead. Book Sapporo hotels for February by October. Beyond the festival week, February is cold but manageable for winter activities: the powder snow at nearby ski resorts (Niseko, Rusutsu, Sapporo Teine) is at its best.

June to July: Summer Sightseeing and Lavender

June and July are Sapporo’s best months for comfortable outdoor exploration. June averages 22°C (72°F) with 58mm rain and lilacs blooming across the city for the Sapporo Lilac Festival. July warms to 25°C (77°F) with 81mm rain and is when lavender peaks in nearby Furano (2 hours by train, late July is optimal). The Yosakoi Soran Festival in early June fills Odori Park with dance performances. July is the peak month for hiking in Daisetsuzan National Park and Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Hotel prices are moderate, 20% to 30% below February peak. Book Furano accommodation 2 to 3 months ahead if visiting in July.

August to September: Peak Summer and Autumn Transition

August is Sapporo’s warmest month (27°C / 81°F) and wettest (131mm). The Obon holiday week (mid-August) brings domestic tourism peaks with higher hotel prices. The Sapporo Summer Festival fills Odori Park with beer gardens from mid-July through mid-August, a major draw. September cools to 22°C (72°F) with 140mm of rain, the year’s highest precipitation, partly from typhoon remnants that reach Hokkaido as tropical depressions. Autumn colors begin in late September at higher elevations (Daisetsuzan) and reach Sapporo in mid-October.

October: Autumn Colors

Mid-October is Sapporo’s peak autumn color season. Temperatures average 16°C (61°F) high and 7°C (45°F) low with 114mm of rain. The ginkgo trees on Hokkaido University campus turn gold, and the maples at Nakajima Park and Maruyama Park show red and orange. The Jozankei area (40 minutes from central Sapporo) has the city’s best autumn colors with hot spring resorts amid fall foliage. October hotel prices are moderate. This is an excellent month for combining city sightseeing with day trips to onsen towns. Snow is rare in October (just 1cm average) but possible in the last days.

November to January: Early Winter and Off-Season

November is the start of winter with temperatures of 1°C to 8°C (34°F to 46°F) and 37cm of snowfall. December brings consistent snow (127cm) and temperatures below freezing (2°C to -4°C / 36°F to 25°F). This is the cheapest period for hotels, and tourist numbers are low. The Sapporo White Illumination runs from late November through mid-March in Odori Park and Ekimae-dori. The German Christmas Market in Odori Park runs late November through December 25. January is peak winter cold (-1°C to -7°C / 30°F to 19°F) with 173cm of snowfall but hotel prices remain lower than the February festival peak. The Sapporo weather data shows January is the coldest and snowiest month.
