Byron Bay is Australia’s most famous beach town, perched at the continent’s easternmost point on the New South Wales north coast. The town has a subtropical climate with warm, wet summers (December to February averaging 28°C/82°F) and mild, dry winters (June to August averaging 20°C/68°F). Annual rainfall runs about 1,500mm, concentrated in summer and autumn. Sea temperatures stay between 21°C and 27°C year-round, making the water swimmable in every season. Whale watching peaks from June to November when humpbacks migrate past Cape Byron.

Set in Bundjalung country at latitude 28.6°S, Byron Bay packs surf culture, rainforest hinterland, and a thriving food and music scene into a town of just 9,000 permanent residents. (The population swells to 50,000+ in summer.) The Cape Byron lighthouse, built in 1901, marks the spot where the Australian continent ends and the Pacific Ocean stretches uninterrupted to South America. The lighthouse walking track is the single activity every visitor should do.
The town’s orientation is simple: Main Beach fronts the town centre, Wategos and The Pass curl around the north side of the headland, and Tallows Beach runs south toward Broken Head. Jonson Street is the main drag with cafes, surf shops, and the bus station. Everything in town is walkable within 15 minutes.
