The Blue Mountains are a World Heritage-listed sandstone plateau an hour and a half west of Sydney, where a chain of villages sits on a 1,000-metre ridge above the Jamison and Grose valleys. Katoomba, the main town, averages a 23°C summer high and a 9°C winter high, with 1,411mm of rain a year, so the region is a cool, green escape from the coast in every season. This guide covers the climate, the towns and the best hotels, with seven focused articles below.
Blue Mountains Climate at a Glance
The climate is high-altitude oceanic: mild summers, cold winters and rain in every month. January is the warmest month at 23.4°C (74°F) and July the coldest at 9.5°C (49°F), with winter nights regularly below freezing. February is the wettest month at 177.8mm and September the driest at 70.7mm, so spring and autumn give the best balance of clear skies and comfortable walking temperatures.
Seasonal Snapshot
- Summer (December to February): warm days of 22 to 23°C, humid, and the wettest season, with afternoon thunderstorms common.

Location and Geography
The Greater Blue Mountains Area, UNESCO World Heritage listed in 2000, covers about 10,000 square kilometres of sandstone plateau 65 to 110 km west of Sydney. The escarpment drops 500 metres into the Jamison and Grose valleys, and the towns sit on the ridgeline: Katoomba at 1,017 metres, Leura just below it, and Blackheath and Mount Victoria above 1,060 metres. The elevation is what makes the climate so much cooler than Sydney’s, and it is the reason the eucalyptus haze gives the mountains their blue colour.
