The Blue Mountains are a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want: mild hiking weather, low hotel prices, clear lookout views or a specific festival. The sweet spot for most people is autumn (March to May) or spring (September to November), when daytime highs sit between 13 and 20°C and rain is lower than summer. This guide, part of our Blue Mountains travel guide, breaks the best time to visit the Blue Mountains down by weather, cost, crowds and events.
Best Time to Visit the Blue Mountains for Good Weather
March to May and September to November offer the most reliable conditions. In April and October, Katoomba averages highs of 17 to 18°C with 92 to 122mm of rain, and the air is dry and clear, which gives the sharpest views across the Jamison Valley. Avoid February, the wettest month at 177.8mm, and July, when the 9.5°C high and frosty 2.6°C lows make exposed lookouts cold. For exact month-by-month figures, see the weather by month guide.
Best Time to Visit the Blue Mountains for Lower Prices
Hotel rates drop most in winter (June to August) and on weekdays year-round. A four-star Katoomba room that costs A$300 to A$400 a night on a spring weekend can fall to A$180 to A$250 on a winter Tuesday. The YHA hostel and pub hotels like Gardners Inn in Blackheath stay under A$120 a night in every season; the where to stay guide lists options in each village. School holidays (mid-December to late January, and the two-week April and July breaks) push prices and minimum-stay rules up, so book outside those windows.
Best Time to Visit the Blue Mountains to Avoid Crowds
Weekends are busy all year because Sydney day-trippers arrive by train and car from 8am, but the biggest crowds hit Echo Point and Scenic World between 10am and 2pm on public holidays and school breaks. To dodge them, visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or arrive at Scenic World for its 9am opening. June and August weekdays are the quietest, and trails like the Grand Canyon Track in Blackheath are far less busy than the Katoomba lookouts at any time of year; the neighborhoods guide maps the quieter villages.
Best Time to Visit the Blue Mountains for Events
The festival calendar peaks in spring and early summer. The Leura Gardens Festival opens private gardens in the first week of October, the Blackheath Rhododendron Festival runs in early November, and Ultra-Trail Australia brings thousands of runners to Katoomba in May. Winter has Yulefest (Christmas in July) dinners, and the Winter Magic program runs around the June solstice. Plan around these dates with the full events and festivals calendar.

Best Time to Visit the Blue Mountains: When to Skip
Skip the second half of January if you dislike heat and school-holiday crowds, and avoid February if you want dry trails. Winter (June to August) is fine for short walks and cosy stays but is too cold and foggy for early-morning lookouts if you are only making a day trip.
