Belem, the capital of Para state, sits at the mouth of the Amazon River where freshwater meets the Atlantic Ocean at 1.5 degrees south of the equator. With 1.5 million residents in its urban core, it is the largest city on the equator in the Americas and the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon. The city is known for three things: the Ver-o-Peso market, the largest open-air market in Latin America operating since 1625; the Cirio de Nazare, a religious procession that draws 2 million pilgrims each October; and a distinctive Amazonian cuisine built around acai, tucupi, and freshwater fish that you will not find anywhere else in Brazil.

Belem has an equatorial climate (Koppen Af) with hot, humid conditions year-round. Temperatures range from 30 to 32 degrees C (86 to 90 F) every month with nighttime lows of 22 to 24 degrees C (72 to 75 F). Annual rainfall totals roughly 2,900mm (114 inches). There is no true dry season, but August through November sees significantly less rain (117 to 126mm per month) and 6 to 8 hours of daily sunshine. The wettest period runs from December through May, with March recording 437mm and just 3.3 hours of daily sun. Humidity ranges from 80 to 90 percent.

Welcome to Belem: Brazil’s Amazon Capital

Belem was founded in 1616 as the Portuguese fort of Presepio, the first European settlement in the Amazon. The city exploded during the rubber boom of the late 19th century, funding the construction of the Theatro da Paz, the iron Ver-o-Peso market structure, and the grand mansions of Nazare. Today Belem is a working port city of 1.5 million that rewards travelers who understand its rhythms: mornings at the fish market, afternoons dodging tropical downpours, and evenings along the waterfront at Estacao das Docas. The neighborhoods of Cidade Velha, Campina, Nazare, Batista Campos, and Umarizal each offer a different face of the city.

What sets Belem apart from other Brazilian cities is its food. Acai here is a savory meal, served with fried fish and tapioca, not sweetened as a smoothie bowl. Tacaca, a hot soup of tucupi and jambu, numbs your tongue as you eat it. Pato no tucupi, duck cooked in fermented manioc juice, is the city’s signature dish. The Ver-o-Peso market is the place to try all of it, ideally before 9am when the morning bustle peaks.

Belem Seasonal Snapshot

Wet season (December to May): Heavy rainfall (230 to 437mm monthly), high humidity (83 to 90 percent), limited sunshine (3.3 to 5.6 hours per day). Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily occurrences. This is the low season for tourism, which means lower hotel prices and fewer crowds at attractions. Carnival in February brings street parties regardless of weather. The dry months of December and January include Christmas and New Year celebrations at Estacao das Docas.

Dry season (June to November): Significantly less rain (117 to 168mm monthly), lower humidity (80 to 83 percent), and much more sunshine (6.1 to 8.0 hours per day). This is the best time for outdoor activities, island trips, and exploring neighborhoods on foot. July is Brazilian school holiday month with higher domestic tourism. August is the single best month for weather. October brings the massive Cirio de Nazare pilgrimage which fills the city completely. November offers an excellent balance of good weather and manageable crowds after the Cirio crowds disperse.
