Belem’s equatorial climate means you can visit any month of the year and find warm temperatures in the 30 to 32 degree C range (86 to 90 F). What changes is the rain. The best time to visit Belem for dry weather and outdoor activities is August through November, when rainfall drops to 117 to 126mm per month and you get 6 to 8 hours of daily sunshine. The worst months are February and March, when 400-plus mm of rain falls and sunshine dips below 4 hours per day.

Best Time to Visit Belem for Dry Weather: August to November

August through November is Belem’s driest period with monthly rainfall between 117 and 126mm spread across 15 to 16 days. August is the single best month: 117mm of rain, 8 hours of sun per day, and humidity at its annual low of 80 percent. The river beaches on Mosqueiro Island (Praia do Farol, Praia do Marahu) are fully exposed during these months as Amazon water levels recede from their May peak. Island trips to Combu and Cotijuba are most reliable with fewer rain cancellations. Walk around Cidade Velha and Ver-o-Peso market without sweating through your shirt in 20 minutes.

The trade-off is that August and September are Brazilian school holiday months and domestic tourism peaks. Hotels in Nazare and Umarizal fill up. Book accommodations 4 to 6 weeks in advance for August. November sees fewer crowds after the Cirio de Nazare ends in October, but the rains begin creeping back toward the end of the month.

Best Time to Visit Belem for Cirio de Nazare: Second Sunday of October

The Cirio de Nazare on the second Sunday of October is Belem’s defining event. Two million pilgrims fill the streets for a 3.6km procession from the Se Cathedral to the Basilica of Nazare. The weather in October is typically cooperative: 121mm of rain, 6.7 hours of daily sun, and humidity at 80 percent. However, the city becomes what locals call “a capital da fe” (the capital of faith) and logistics get complicated. Hotel rooms sell out 3 to 6 months in advance. Prices triple. Restaurants run limited menus. Streets close throughout the Cidade Velha and Nazare neighborhoods. If Cirio is your goal, book everything by June and accept that you will pay premium rates and deal with massive crowds.

Best Time to Visit Belem for Lowest Prices: February to May

The wettest months (February through May) bring the lowest accommodation prices. You can find hotel rooms for 40 to 60 percent less than dry-season rates. February specifically coincides with Carnival, which in Belem means street blocos with live carimbo and tecnobrega music rather than Rio-style samba parades. March and April see the heaviest rainfall (380 to 437mm) but also offer a genuine Amazon experience: watching tropical downpours from a covered terrace at Estacao das Docas with a bowl of acai is part of Belem’s character. If you are on a budget and do not mind carrying a rain jacket and planning around afternoon storms, February to May delivers the best value.

Worst Months to Visit Belem: February and March

February and March are the toughest months. February hits 90 percent humidity with 418mm of rain over 25 days. March is even wetter at 437mm and records just 3.3 hours of daily sunshine, the lowest of the year. Streets flood in lower neighborhoods like Cidade Velha and Campina. Outdoor attractions such as Mangal das Garcas and the Ver-o-Peso market become exercises in dodging downpours. Island trips are frequently cancelled or cut short by storms. The one saving grace is Carnival in February, which goes ahead regardless of weather. If you must visit during these months, stay in elevated neighborhoods (Nazare, Batista Campos), use Uber or 99 for transport between sights, and pack quick-dry everything.
