João Pessoa is the capital of Paraíba and the easternmost city in the Americas, set on a 24 km coastline of calm, warm beaches. It has a tropical monsoon climate with temperatures of 21°C to 31°C all year and about 1,915 mm of rain, concentrated from March to August. This page is the hub for seven focused guides covering the weather, the best time to visit, things to do, events, neighborhoods, hotels and travel tips.
Welcome to João Pessoa
The first sunrise of the American continent breaks over Ponta do Seixas at the southern end of the city, which is why locals call it Porta do Sol, the Gate of the Sun. The urban beach strip runs from Bessa in the north through Manaíra, Tambaú and Cabo Branco, all public and free. Inland, a compact colonial centre holds one of Brazil’s finest baroque complexes at São Francisco. It is a beach city with a real old town, quieter and cheaper than Recife two hours to the south.

Location and Geography
João Pessoa sits at the easternmost point of the American continent, at roughly 7°S latitude, on the Paraíba River delta. Its coast faces due east, which keeps the ocean breezes constant and the climate stable. The city is about 120 km north of Recife and 660 km north of Salvador. Its position as the first landmass to see the sunrise on the continent is the city’s defining geographic fact, celebrated daily at Ponta do Seixas.
