João Pessoa is the easternmost city in the Americas, so its headline sight is watching the first sunrise of the continent from Ponta do Seixas. Beyond that, the city offers 24 km of urban beaches, a baroque historic centre and day trips to cliff-lined coves. Entry to most sights is free or under R$30, and the beaches are public with no access fee. For the wider picture, see the full João Pessoa travel guide.
Things to Do in João Pessoa: Beaches and the Coastline
Tambaú Beach
The main tourist beach, a 4 km curve of calm water backed by a paved boardwalk, beach bars and the Mercado de Artesanato Paraibano. Rentals of chairs and umbrellas run about R$15 to R$30 per day from kiosks. The water is shallow and calm, which suits families. Most hotels in the where to stay in João Pessoa guide sit within two blocks of this sand.
Cabo Branco Beach and the Farol do Cabo Branco
A cleaner, cliff-backed stretch south of Tambaú, ending at the Farol do Cabo Branco lighthouse. The triangular lighthouse was inaugurated on 21 April 1972 and marks the easternmost point of the Americas. The viewpoint is free and open daily from about 8:00 to 17:00; parking costs R$10. Next to it, Bosque dos Sonhos charges R$8 entry on weekends and holidays and is free on weekdays.
Praia do Seixas (Easternmost Point of the Americas)
The actual eastern tip of the continent, a small strip just beyond the lighthouse. A boardwalk leads to a monument marking longitude 34°47’35” west. The first sunrise of the Americas is visible here, and locals gather before dawn. It is free and open all hours, and it is a short walk from the Farol do Cabo Branco. The best time to visit João Pessoa guide covers the sunniest stretch for an early rise.
Bessa Beach
A quieter northern beach with firmer sand and a strip of beachfront restaurants, about 8 km north of Tambaú. It draws fewer vendors than the central beaches and is popular with families and kitesurfers. Parking is easier here, and the natural pools at low tide suit young children. Check the João Pessoa weather by month data for the calmest sea before you go.
Pôr do Sol do Jacaré (Jacaré Beach Sunset)
At Jacaré Beach in the neighbouring town of Cabedelo, about 20 km north, a saxophonist plays Ravel’s Bolero as the sun drops into the Paraíba River each afternoon. Boats line the riverbank and vendors sell drinks. Arrive by 16:30 to get a spot; the ritual happens at sunset, roughly 17:00 to 17:30. It is the single most popular free outing from the city.
Things to Do in João Pessoa: History and Culture
Centro Cultural São Francisco
A 17th-century baroque complex of the Igreja de São Francisco and Convento de Santo Antônio in the historic centre, one of the most intact baroque ensembles in Brazil and protected by IPHAN since 1952. Entry is R$10, open Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 to 16:00 and Sunday 9:00 to 15:00. A guided tour costs about R$24 and lasts 40 minutes.
Centro Histórico (Historic Centre)
The compact old town clusters around Praça Antenor Navarro and the pink Hotel Globo, a former 1920s hotel turned cultural space overlooking the Sanhauá River. The nearby Casa da Pólvora is an 18th-century gunpowder storehouse, and the streets are lined with pastel colonial houses. It is free to walk, though the area is quiet and best visited by day; allow two hours.
Estação Cabo Branco (Cabo Branco Science Station)
An 8,500 m² cultural and science complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened on 3 July 2008, near the lighthouse. It hosts free art and astronomy exhibitions in a tower and an auditorium. Open Tuesday to Friday 9:00 to 21:00 and weekends 10:00 to 21:00, with free entry.
Mercado de Artesanato Paraibano
The main handicraft market on Avenida Senador Ruy Carneiro in Tambaú, selling local lace (renda renascença), clay figures, hammocks and cachaça. Open daily from about 9:00 to 20:00. Prices are negotiable, and it is the easiest place to buy a genuine Paraíba souvenir near the beach. It sits close to where the main events and festivals in João Pessoa stage on Tambaú Beach.
Things to Do in João Pessoa: Parks and Day Trips
Parque Solon de Lucena (Lagoa)
A central park built around a lagoon in the city centre, with a paddleboat dock and shaded walking paths. The lagoon is lit at night and is a local meeting point. Free to enter; paddleboat hire costs around R$20. It is the best green stop if you are already visiting the neighborhoods of João Pessoa on a walking tour.
Jardim Botânico Benjamim Maranhão
A 515-hectare Atlantic Forest reserve in the middle of the city, one of the largest urban forest remnants in Brazil. Trails run through native mata atlântica with guides available on request. Free entry, open weekdays; bring insect repellent and closed shoes.
Day Trip South: Coqueirinho and Tabatinga
About 25 to 30 km south of the city, Coqueirinho is a cove framed by red-and-gold cliffs, and Tabatinga has natural tidal pools and gentle surf. Both have kiosk food and parking. A round trip by car or tour takes a full morning or afternoon, and entry to the beaches is free.
Day Trip North: Cabedelo and Fortaleza de Santa Catarina
Across the river in Cabedelo, the 1589 Fortaleza de Santa Catarina guards the Paraíba River mouth and is open to visitors for a small fee of about R$5. Combine it with the Jacaré sunset for a full day north of the city. Ferry and bus connections from João Pessoa run regularly; timings and fares are covered in the João Pessoa travel tips page.
