Okayama, a city of about 720,000 people on Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, is nicknamed the Land of Sunshine for its roughly 2,000 hours of sun and 1,100 mm of rain a year, among the driest climates in western Japan. Its drawcards are the three hundred year old Korakuen Garden, the black Crow Castle, the preserved merchant quarter of Kurashiki, and the art island of Naoshima. This guide covers the weather by month figures, the best seasons to visit, the top things to do, and where to stay.

Welcome to Okayama

Okayama grew as a castle town under the Ikeda clan and became famous for two things: the Korakuen Garden and the Momotaro peach boy folk tale that originated here. Today it works as a relaxed, affordable stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen line between Osaka and Hiroshima. The city is compact, the trams are cheap, and the Inland Sea climate means you can sightsee comfortably for much of the year.

Okayama Weather at a Glance

Okayama has a humid subtropical climate moderated by the Inland Sea, with four clear seasons. January is the coldest month at 9°C (48°F) by day and 1°C (34°F) at night, while August peaks at 33°C (91°F). Rainfall averages about 1,100 mm a year, concentrated in June’s tsuyu rainy season and in September’s typhoon window, while the driest months are December and January at under 40 mm each.

The city’s Land of Sunshine reputation comes from its roughly 2,000 annual sunshine hours, higher than Tokyo or Osaka. The mountains of Shikoku to the south block much of the rain that hits the Pacific coast, which is why Okayama gets noticeably less July rain than most of Honshu. For the full month by month numbers, read the best time to visit guide’s seasonal breakdown alongside the weather by month data.

Okayama Seasons

  • Spring (March to May): Cherry blossoms in late March to early April, warming to 25°C (77°F) in May with 200 sunshine hours, the most comfortable sightseeing weather of the year.
  • Summer (June to August): The June rainy season brings 185 mm, then hot and humid 31°C to 33°C (88°F to 91°F) days in July and August, peak peach season and the Momotaro Festival.
  • Autumn (September to November): Typhoon risk eases by October, and November is dry and crisp at 16°C (61°F), ideal for cycling the Kibi Plain and Kurashiki.
  • Winter (December to February): Mild and dry with 9°C to 11°C (48°F to 52°F) days, the cheapest season, punctuated by the Saidaiji Eyo festival in February.
