Heraklion is Crete’s capital and largest city, home to about 180,000 people and the main gateway to Greece’s biggest island. It is best known as the modern neighbour of Knossos, the ceremonial centre of the Minoan civilisation, and as the island’s main ferry and cruise port. The city has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate: July and August average 28.6°C (83.5°F) with almost no rain, while January averages 15.2°C (59°F) and 91 mm of rain. This guide covers the weather, the best time to come, things to do, the annual events, the neighbourhoods, where to stay, and the practical travel tips for a smooth trip.
Welcome to Heraklion
Heraklion works as a short city break and as the launch pad for a longer Crete itinerary. The old town, still ringed by its Venetian walls, packs the Archaeological Museum, the Morosini Fountain and a tangle of pedestrian shopping streets into a walkable core, while the ferry port on one side and a 7 km beach on the other give the city two very different faces. Most visitors spend two or three days here: one for Knossos and the museum, one for the old town and the harbour, and one on the beach or a day trip.

Location and Climate Context
Heraklion sits on the north coast of Crete, the largest island in Greece, facing the Aegean Sea and backed by the Psiloritis range to the southwest. Its position at sea level, combined with the warm Libyan Sea to the south, gives it a milder, sunnier climate than mainland Greece, with a longer swimming season and very mild winters. The city is a natural base for exploring the rest of the island: Rethymno is about 80 km west, Chania about 140 km west, and the eastern coast beaches start within 10 km of the centre.
