The best time to visit Heraklion depends on what you want: July and August give you guaranteed sun and a warm sea, while May, June, September and October offer similar weather with smaller crowds and lower prices. Winter is the cheapest and quietest season but brings rain and closed beach resorts. This guide sets out the best months by weather, cost and crowd level. Pair it with our Heraklion weather by month page for exact temperatures, and the main Heraklion travel guide for an overview.
Best Time to Visit Heraklion: At a Glance
For the best mix of warm weather and manageable crowds, aim for the second half of May, June or September. Highs sit between 23°C and 27°C (73°F to 81°F), rain is under 20 mm a month, and the sea is warm enough to swim. July and August are the hottest and driest but also the most expensive and crowded. If you are only interested in sightseeing, see our things to do in Heraklion guide, which lists attractions for every season.
Best Time to Visit Heraklion: Summer (June to August)
June through August is peak season. July and August both average 28.6°C (83.5°F) highs with under 1 mm of rain, and the sea reaches 25 to 26°C (77 to 79°F). Hotel rates are at their highest, and Knossos Palace gets long ticket queues from about 10:00 onward. The 15 August Assumption holiday is the single busiest date on the island, when Greeks travel in large numbers; book ferries a month ahead.
Best Time to Visit Heraklion: Shoulder Seasons (April to May, September to October)
April, May, September and October are the best-value months. May averages 23.5°C (74°F) and 15 mm of rain; September averages 26.2°C (79°F) with the sea still at 25°C (77°F). You will pay roughly 30 to 40 percent less for hotels than in August, and attractions are far less crowded. Many restaurants and beach bars run full schedules from late April through October. For a breakdown of the city’s districts, see our Heraklion neighborhoods guide.
Best Time to Visit Heraklion: Winter (November to March)
November to March is the low season. Highs sit between 15 and 20°C (59 to 68°F), and each month brings 60 to 97 mm of rain. Many beach resorts in nearby Amoudara close from November to March, though the city centre stays open year-round. Prices drop to their lowest, and you will have museums and the old town almost to yourself. If you plan a winter visit, our Heraklion events and festivals page lists the carnival and Christmas markets that keep the city lively.
Best Time to Visit Heraklion: By Travel Style
For beach holidays, pick July to September, when the sea is 25°C (77°F) or warmer. For sightseeing and day trips, May and October are ideal because temperatures are comfortable for walking around Knossos. For budget travel, November and February offer the cheapest flights and rooms. Families tend to prefer June and September to avoid the August crowds.
