Ancona is the capital of Italy’s Marche region and the largest Adriatic port between Venice and Bari. Built on a natural promontory that juts into the sea, the city’s Greek origins date to 387 BC, and its layered history is visible everywhere: a Roman triumphal arch at the harbor entrance, a medieval cathedral on the hilltop, and Renaissance fortifications ringing the old town. The Conero Riviera begins just south of the city limits, adding white limestone cliffs and turquoise coves to what is already one of Italy’s more underrated urban destinations.

Welcome to Ancona

Most travelers encounter Ancona as a transit point: the ferries to Croatia, Greece, and Albania depart from here, and the train station on the Bologna-Lecce line makes it a natural stop on an Adriatic itinerary. But the city rewards those who stay longer. The Duomo di San Ciriaco surveys the sea from Guasco Hill, the pentagonal Mole Vanvitelliana sits on its own island in the port, and the Passetto beach delivers swimming within walking distance of the center. Restaurants serve brodetto all’anconetana, the region’s signature fish stew, and the Thursday market in Piazza del Plebiscito has been running for centuries.

Ancona Weather at a Glance

Ancona sits on the boundary between Mediterranean and continental climate zones. Summers are hot and mostly dry: July and August average 29°C (84°F) during the day with sea temperatures reaching 25-26°C (77-79°F). Winters are cool and damp with January highs around 10°C (50°F) and lows of 3°C (37°F). The city gets about 740mm (29 inches) of rain annually, with a pronounced autumn peak in November (85mm). Spring and autumn are the sweet spots: May offers 22°C (72°F) days with 8 hours of sunshine, while September delivers sea temperatures of 23°C (73°F) well into the third week.

Ancona Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Temperatures climb from 14°C (57°F) in March to 22°C (72°F) in May. Rainfall is moderate. The Conero hills bloom with wildflowers and orchids in April. The Festa di San Ciriaco on May 4 brings a harbor parade and fireworks. This is the best season for hiking and sightseeing.
  • Summer (June to August): Peak heat arrives with July and August both averaging 29°C (84°F). Sea temperatures peak at 26°C (79°F). The Conero beaches fill to capacity, especially around Ferragosto (August 15). The Ancona Jazz Festival runs through June, and the Mole Vanvitelliana hosts outdoor cinema all summer. Book accommodation well ahead for August.
  • Autumn (September to November): September is arguably the best month: 25°C (77°F) days, warm sea, and the Festa del Mare on the first weekend. October brings beautiful clear days for hiking but rain increases. November is the wettest month (85mm) and the least appealing for tourism, though hotel prices bottom out.
  • Winter (December to February): Cool and damp with highs around 10-11°C (50-52°F). Snow is rare in the city but possible on the Conero hills. Christmas markets run from December 8 to January 6, and the Presepe Vivente living nativity in the Passetto caves is a local highlight. Ferry services to Croatia and Greece continue year-round but on reduced schedules.
