Ancona Neighborhoods Guide

Italy Marche Ancona

Ancona divides naturally between its historic center perched on the hills above the port, the 19th-century grid of the Piano district, and the modern sprawl extending along the coast. Each area has a distinct character, price range, and target traveler. The city is compact enough that you can walk between most neighborhoods in under 30 minutes, but the hills are genuine: a local bus or taxi is worth considering if you are staying in the higher parts of the historic center.

Ancona Neighborhoods: Centro Storico (Old Town)

The historic center climbs from the port up Guasco Hill to the Duomo. Narrow medieval alleys (vicoli) connect to small piazzas, and you will find the Cathedral, the ruins of the Roman amphitheater, and the best concentration of restaurants and wine bars between Via della Loggia and Via Cialdini. Streets are steep and stepped in places with limited vehicle access. This is where you stay for atmosphere: old stone buildings, views over the port, and the feeling of being in the oldest part of the city. The trade-off is that many buildings lack elevators and parking is nearly impossible (use the Traiano parking garage at the port base, EUR 1.50/hour). Hotel rooms average EUR 80-120 per night. Ancona Neighborhoods: Piano San Lazzaro

The flat grid of streets between Piazza Cavour and the train station makes up the city’s 19th-century commercial center. This is where you find the main shopping streets (Corso Garibaldi, Corso Stamira), the Teatro delle Muse, Piazza Roma with its fountain, and the bulk of Ancona’s bars and cafes. It is the most practical base: flat terrain, direct bus links to the station and port, and prices roughly 20% lower than the historic center. Hotels in this zone run EUR 60-100 per night. The area around Via Montebello has several good value B&Bs in converted apartments.

Ancona Neighborhoods: Passetto

The elegant residential area above the Passetto Beach, built in the early 20th century with Liberty-style villas and wide tree-lined streets. This is Ancona’s nicest neighborhood, home to the Monumento ai Caduti and the elevator down to the beach. The Viale della Vittoria seafront promenade stretches 2km with uninterrupted sea views and is packed with joggers and cyclists at sunset. Restaurants here lean upscale (antipasti EUR 12-18, mains EUR 18-30). Hotel prices reflect the premium location at EUR 100-180 per night. If you want a quiet, green neighborhood within walking distance of a beach, this is your best choice. Buses 1/4 and 1/3 connect Passetto to the center in 10 minutes. Ancona Neighborhoods: Porto and Waterfront

The port zone along Molo Rizzo and the ferry terminal has a raw, working atmosphere rather than a sanitized marina. Ferry passengers heading to Croatia, Greece, and Albania pass through here daily. The area around the Mole Vanvitelliana has seen recent investment with new bars and the museum complex. You are close to the Arch of Trajan and the ferry terminal (useful for early sailings). Accommodation skews toward functional 2-3 star hotels catering to ferry passengers at EUR 50-80 per night. This is the budget-friendly option. The downside: it is a port area with truck traffic during the day and limited dining options compared to the center.

Ancona Neighborhoods: The Conero Riviera (Portonovo, Sirolo, Numana)

Though outside Ancona’s city limits, the three coastal villages south along Monte Conero function as its beach suburbs. Portonovo has only a handful of hotels but they sit directly on the best beaches. Sirolo and Numana are fully-fledged resort towns 12-15km south of Ancona with proper infrastructure: supermarkets, dozens of restaurants, beach establishments. Sirolo’s medieval center perched on a cliff above the sea is genuinely beautiful. Bus line RE1 connects Ancona station to Sirolo and Numana (EUR 2.50, 30 minutes). Summer hotel rates in Sirolo run EUR 120-250. If your trip is primarily about the beach, stay here and day-trip into Ancona for sightseeing.
