Olbia is the main gateway to Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, a city of 60,000 that handles over 3 million passengers annually through its airport and ferry port. Set on a deep natural gulf in northeastern Sardinia, Olbia combines a 2,500-year history stretching from Nuragic settlers through Roman rule to Pisan medieval influence with immediate access to some of the Mediterranean’s most famous beaches. The city itself rewards a day of exploration with an 11th-century granite basilica, a Roman shipwreck museum, and a lively evening aperitivo scene along Corso Umberto. But Olbia’s real strength is as a base for things to do in Olbia: within 30 minutes you can be swimming at Cala Brandinchi, hiking granite trails in Gallura, or sipping Vermentino at a vineyard overlooking the sea.

Welcome to Olbia: Sardinia’s Northeastern Hub

Unlike the glossy, purpose-built resorts of Porto Cervo 30 km north, Olbia is a working city with deep roots. The name comes from the Greek “olbios” (happy or prosperous), given by Greek settlers who established a trading post here in the 4th century BCE. The Romans later built a major port, and the medieval Pisans left the Basilica of San Simplicio, still the city’s spiritual heart. Today, the ferry horns and airport announcements provide the soundtrack, while the real action happens at aperitivo hour when Corso Umberto fills with locals and visitors sharing plates of pecorino and glasses of Vermentino di Gallura, Sardinia’s only DOCG wine.
