Naples has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Located on the Bay of Naples at 40°N latitude, the city benefits from a coastal position that moderates temperature extremes. Annual rainfall totals 1,007mm, concentrated from October through January. Summers are reliably sunny with July delivering 310 hours of sunshine and just 24mm of rain over 2 days. Winter temperatures stay mild, with January lows of 4°C (39°F) and highs of 13°C (55°F) , snow is almost unknown.

The best time to visit is mid-April through mid-June and mid-September through mid-October. During these windows, daytime highs of 19 to 27°C (66 to 81°F) make archaeological sites and city walking comfortable, rainfall is moderate, and crowds are thinner than the July-August peak. The sea becomes swimmable by late May (19°C/66°F) and stays warm through mid-October (22°C/72°F). Avoid August if possible , the combination of peak heat (30°C/86°F), peak tourism, and the Ferragosto holiday shutdown makes it the least pleasant month for sightseeing.

Naples is Italy’s third-largest city and one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited urban centers, founded as a Greek colony (Neapolis) around 800 BCE. Its UNESCO-listed historic center is the largest in Europe, a dense grid of churches, palazzi, and pizzerias where the Margherita pizza was invented at Pizzeria Brandi in 1889. The city serves as the primary gateway to Pompeii (24km southeast), Herculaneum (13km southeast), Mount Vesuvius, and the Amalfi Coast.
