Bonn sits on the Rhine River in western Germany, about 25 minutes south of Cologne. The city was West Germany’s capital from 1949 to 1990 and remains an important federal city with several government ministries still based here. Ludwig van Beethoven was born at Bonngasse 20 in 1770 and the city celebrates his legacy year-round with festivals, concerts, and one of Europe’s best composer-house museums. Bonn’s compact Altstadt, five-museum Museum Mile, and cherry blossom avenues draw visitors looking for a less touristy alternative to Cologne with easy access to the Siebengebirge hills and the Ahr Valley wine region.

Where is Bonn?

Bonn is in western Germany in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the left bank of the Rhine River about 25km (15 miles) south of Cologne and 90km (56 miles) north of Koblenz. The city sits at the northern end of the Middle Rhine Valley where the river cuts through the Rhenish Slate Mountains (Siebengebirge range). The Rhine influences Bonn’s climate by moderating temperature extremes. Bonn was chosen as West Germany’s provisional capital in 1949 in part because of its modest size (then 115,000 people): the thinking was that a small capital would signal the government’s temporary nature before reunification. Berlin reclaimed the capital in 1990 but six federal ministries, 19 UN organizations, and Deutsche Post DHL still have their headquarters in Bonn, giving the city an international, white-collar character alongside its university-town atmosphere.
