Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, has one of the hottest climates of any major city in Mexico. It sits about 210 metres (690 ft) above sea level in the Sonoran Desert, where summer highs routinely pass 40°C (104°F) and the city has touched 48°C (118°F) on record. Rainfall averages about 345 mm a year, almost all of it in the July-to-September monsoon, and the city enjoys roughly 2,900 hours of sunshine annually. The comfortable season runs from November through April, which is when most travelers visit.
Hermosillo Weather at a Glance
Hermosillo has a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh). Winters are mild, with December and January averaging highs of 24°C (75°F) and lows near 9°C (48°F), while summers are extreme: June and July average 39°C (102°F) with overnight lows that stay around 27°C (81°F). The North American monsoon brings the year’s rain in July (91 mm) and August (92 mm) in short, intense afternoon storms, and humidity climbs to about 60 percent before easing again in October.
The city’s spring is dry and heats up quickly, jumping from 29°C (84°F) in March to 36°C (97°F) in May. Autumn cools just as fast, from 34°C (93°F) in October to 29°C (84°F) in November. Because Sonora sits in the far northwest of Mexico, Hermosillo does not feel the tropical humidity of the Gulf coast or the Pacific south; the heat is dry for most of the year, which makes shade and air conditioning effective.

Location and What Shapes Hermosillo’s Weather
Hermosillo lies in west-central Sonora, about 270 km (168 mi) south of the US border at Nogales, Arizona, and roughly 100 km (62 mi) inland from the Gulf of California. Its position in the Sonoran Desert, at low elevation and shielded from coastal breezes by distance, is what makes it so hot. The nearby Sierra Madre Occidental blocks some Pacific moisture from the west, while the summer monsoon pulls in humid air from the Gulf of California to the south, which is why the rain arrives in one concentrated July-to-September burst.
The Gulf also matters for trips: BahÃa de Kino, the nearest beach, is about 110 km (68 mi) west, and San Carlos, near Guaymas, is about 130 km (81 mi) south. Both are noticeably cooler and more humid than the city on summer afternoons, which is why locals escape to the coast on hot weekends.
