León, the largest city in the state of Guanajuato, sits at 1,815 metres (5,955 ft) in Mexico’s Bajío region, where a dry, sunny climate and cool nights make it comfortable nearly all year. It’s best known as the country’s footwear and leather capital and as the home of the Festival Internacional del Globo, Latin America’s biggest hot air balloon event. The city averages 19.9°C (67.8°F) and gets 680 mm (26.8 in) of rain a year, concentrated in summer afternoon storms. This guide covers the weather, the best months to visit, what to do, and where to stay.

Welcome to León: Weather at a Glance

León has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwa) that borders on semi-arid, split cleanly between a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from late May to October. Afternoon highs run from 24°C (75°F) in December and January to 32°C (89°F) in May, while nights stay cool year-round, dropping to 8°C (46°F) in winter. Because of the elevation, the heat is dry rather than humid, and there is no snow. Rain falls almost entirely as brief, heavy evening thunderstorms, with July the wettest month at 185 mm (7.3 in) and March the driest at just 5 mm.

In practice, this means the city is at its best from November through April, when skies are reliably blue and you can plan outdoors without checking the forecast. The summer months trade some afternoon rain for green landscapes and hotel rates that run a third lower. The one date that reshapes the whole city is the balloon festival in mid-November, when rooms sell out months ahead.

León Seasonal Snapshot

  • Winter (December to February): sunny days near 24-26°C (75-79°F), nights down to 8°C (46°F), almost no rain.
  • Spring (March to May): the driest and warmest stretch, peaking at 32°C (89°F) in May with clear skies.
  • Summer (June to August): afternoon thunderstorms and the year’s rain, warm and green with lower hotel prices.
  • Autumn (September to November): rains fade, temperatures settle near 26°C (78°F), and the balloon festival lands in November.

Where Is León and What Shapes Its Climate

León sits in the southwest corner of Guanajuato state, about 380 km northwest of Mexico City and 230 km northeast of Guadalajara, on a high plain in the Bajío. Its elevation of 1,815 metres is the single biggest factor in its climate, moderating what would otherwise be hot lowland temperatures. The Sierra de Lobos rises to the north and the Sierra de Guanajuato to the east, and the city’s inland position, far from both the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico, keeps it dry for most of the year. This is the same weather system that gives the whole Bajío its reliable winter sunshine.

Where to Stay in León

León’s hotels concentrate in two zones. The Poliforum district on Boulevard López Mateos is the practical base for the balloon festival, the fair, and business trips, and it holds most of the international chains. The historic center and Zona Piel put the cathedral and the leather shops within walking distance. A third, quieter option is the upscale Campestre neighborhood to the south. The full area-by-area breakdown, with three hotel picks per zone, is linked in the guides above.
