León sits at 1,815 metres (5,955 ft) in Mexico’s central Bajío region, so it gets a mild highland climate instead of the tropical heat of the coasts. The city averages 19.9°C (67.8°F) across the year and collects 680 mm (26.8 in) of rain, nearly all of it falling between June and October. Winter nights drop to about 8°C (46°F), while May afternoons climb past 31°C (88°F). This is a dry, sunny city for most of the year, and it never sees snow. For the full city picture, start with our León travel guide guide.

León Weather by Month: Climate Overview

León has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwa) that borders on semi-arid. The year splits into two clear halves: a dry season from November to April, and a rainy season from late May to October. Rain comes almost entirely as short, heavy afternoon and evening thunderstorms, so even the wettest months still get plenty of morning sun. Because of the elevation, nights stay cool year-round and you’ll rarely need a jacket during the day outside December and January.

The driest month is December with 5 mm (0.2 in), and the wettest is July with 185 mm (7.3 in). Humidity is low in winter (around 40-50%) and rises during the summer rains to about 65-75%. The sunniest stretch runs from February through May, when León regularly logs 8 to 10 hours of sunshine a day.
