Tunisia has a Mediterranean climate in the north, transitioning to semi-arid steppe and Sahara desert in the south. Tunis averages 10°C in January and 27°C in July, with most rain falling from October to March. Hammamet and the Mediterranean coast enjoy hot dry summers (28-32°C) and mild winters (12-16°C). Djerba island is warmer year-round with summer highs of 32°C and winter highs of 17°C. The Sahara (Douz, Tozeur) has extreme temperatures: summer days above 40°C, winter nights near freezing. The best time for sightseeing is March to May and September to November when temperatures sit between 20°C and 28°C.
