The best time to visit Merida is during spring (April to mid-June) and autumn (mid-September to October), when daytime temperatures sit between 21°C and 25°C (70-77°F) and crowds are manageable. These shoulder seasons give you comfortable walking weather for exploring the UNESCO-listed Roman ruins without the extreme heat of summer or the chilly evenings of winter. For monthly climate data, see our Merida weather by month breakdown.

Best Time to Visit Merida: April to June

April through mid-June is Merida’s sweet spot. April delivers highs of 21°C (70°F), May warms to 25°C (77°F), and early June stays around 28-31°C (82-88°F) before the real heat arrives. Rainfall is minimal at 25-30mm per month. The countryside around Extremadura is green from winter rains, and the storks nesting on the aqueduct are active. Hotel rates are lower than peak summer festival season. The Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre are open normal daytime hours, and you will share them with far fewer visitors than in July-August.

Best Time to Visit Merida: July and August for the Theatre Festival

July and August bring scorching heat (daytime highs of 34-35°C / 93-95°F) but also the world-famous Merida Classical Theatre Festival, which runs nightly in the 2,000-year-old Roman Theatre from early July through late August. The performances start at 10:45pm when temperatures have dropped to a more bearable 25-28°C (77-82°F). If you are here primarily for the festival and plan your sightseeing for early mornings (8-11am), this is the most culturally rewarding time to visit. Book hotels and theatre tickets 2-3 months ahead.

Best Time to Visit Merida: September and October

September and October bring a second window of pleasant weather. September still sees highs of 30°C (86°F) but evenings cool quickly. October is cooler with highs of 23°C (73°F) and is the rainiest month at 55mm, though rain comes in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day events. The autumn light on the granite Roman monuments is spectacular, making this the best season for photography. Hotel prices drop significantly after the August holiday exodus.

Visiting Merida in Winter: November to March

Winter in Merida is mild compared to northern Europe but cool by Spanish standards. December and January see highs of 13-14°C (55-57°F) and lows of 4-5°C (39-41°F). You will get just 4-5 hours of sunshine and need a warm jacket for evenings. The upside: you will have the Roman monuments largely to yourself, hotel rates are at their annual low, and the Christmas market in Plaza de Espana adds festive charm. February and March warm gradually to 15-19°C (59-66°F). Semana Santa (Holy Week, March or April depending on the year) fills the city with processions and visitors.

Merida Crowds and Prices by Season

Merida does not experience the crushing overtourism of Barcelona or Seville, but there are clear peak and off-peak patterns. The busiest period is late July through August during the Theatre Festival, when hotels can reach 80-90% occupancy. Semana Santa and the in June also draw crowds. For the lowest prices and fewest visitors, visit in January-February or November (excluding holiday weekends). For the best balance of good weather and moderate crowds, target late April, May, or October. Check our where to stay guide for accommodation options by budget.
