The island sees an average of 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and less than 150mm of annual rainfall, most of which falls between November and February. Daytime highs range from 21°C (70°F) in January to 28°C (82°F) in August, with overnight lows rarely dropping below 14°C (57°F). Fuerteventura Weather by Month: Monthly Breakdown
January is the coolest month with daytime highs of 21°C (70°F) and overnight lows around 14°C (57°F). You can expect 6 hours of sunshine daily and roughly 15mm of rain across 3 wet days. The sea sits at 19°C (66°F). The northeasterly trade winds blow steadily at 15 to 25 km/h, ideal for beginner windsurfers at Costa Calma. February brings similar temperatures to January with highs of 21°C (70°F) and lows of 14°C (57°F). Rainfall drops to about 12mm across 3 days. Sea temperature reaches its annual minimum at 18°C (64°F). The famous Carnival celebrations take place across the island this month, with Puerto del Rosario hosting the largest parade. March sees temperatures climb to 22°C (72°F) during the day with 7 hours of sunshine. Rainfall is minimal at 10mm across 2 days. The sea begins warming to 18.5°C (65°F). The wind is at its strongest from March through May, peaking at 30 to 40 km/h gusts, which draws kitesurfers to Flag Beach in Corralejo and Sotavento in Costa Calma for international competitions. April averages 23°C (73°F) daytime with 14°C (57°F) at night. Rainfall drops to just 5mm over 1 to 2 days, making it one of the driest months. You get 8 hours of daily sunshine and the sea warms to 19°C (66°F). Easter week (Semana Santa) brings Spanish mainland tourists and higher hotel rates. May delivers 24°C (75°F) daytime highs and 8 to 9 hours of sunshine. Rainfall is nearly zero at 1 to 2mm. Sea temperature reaches 20°C (68°F). This is the start of the wind sports high season. Hotel prices remain moderate before the summer rush, making May one of the best-value months for a visit.
June brings summer warmth with highs of 26°C (79°F) and 10 hours of daily sunshine. There is essentially zero rainfall. The sea warms to 21°C (70°F). The calima, a hot dry wind carrying Saharan dust, can occasionally push temperatures above 30°C (86°F) for 2 to 3 day stretches. The UV index reaches 10 to 11, so SPF 50 is essential even on cloudy days.
July averages 27°C (81°F) daytime with overnight lows of 19°C (66°F). You get 11 hours of sunshine and zero measurable rain. Sea temperature climbs to 22°C (72°F). This is the busiest tourist month with Spanish and European school holidays. The wind moderates slightly compared to spring, making beach days more comfortable. Book accommodations and rental cars 2 to 3 months ahead for July stays.
August is the hottest month at 28°C (82°F) during the day, occasionally hitting 32°C (90°F) during calima events. Nights stay warm at 20°C (68°F). The sea reaches its peak warmth of 23°C (73°F). Rainfall remains at zero. Humidity is higher than other months at roughly 70 percent due to the warmer Atlantic. All resorts run at near-full occupancy and the wind typically drops to its annual low, making non-wind-sports beach days at their best.
September stays warm at 27°C (81°F) daytime with 8 hours of sunshine. Sea temperature peaks at 23°C (73°F), the warmest of the year. Rainfall increases slightly to 5mm over 1 to 2 days towards the end of the month. The tourist crowds thin significantly after the first week as European schools resume. This is arguably the best month for swimming and sunbathing with warm water and fewer people on the beaches.
October averages 26°C (79°F) daytime with 7 hours of sunshine. Rainfall increases to 10mm across 2 to 3 days, usually as short afternoon showers. Sea temperature remains pleasant at 22.5°C (72°F). Hotel rates drop 20 to 30 percent from August peaks. The wind picks up again, signaling the start of the winter wind sports season. The Oasis Wildlife park is at its greenest this month.
November brings temperatures down to 24°C (75°F) daytime and 16°C (61°F) at night. Rainfall increases to 18mm across 4 days, tied with December as the wettest month. Sunshine drops to 6 hours daily. The sea holds at 21°C (70°F). This is a transitional month with more cloud cover and the chance of Atlantic storms brushing the island. December averages 22°C (72°F) daytime with 6 hours of sunshine. Rainfall peaks at 20mm across 4 to 5 days, though most days remain dry and sunny. Sea temperature is 20°C (68°F). The Christmas and New Year period sees a spike in tourism from northern Europe, with resorts hosting festive buffets and celebrations.
