Menorca’s accommodation scene divides cleanly into three categories: historic town hotels in Ciutadella and Mahón, beach resorts on the south coast, and rural fincas scattered across the interior. Unlike Mallorca, you won’t find high-rise hotel blocks anywhere: the island’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status limits building heights and density. That means even the largest resort hotels max out at 4 or 5 storeys. Most properties are seasonal, opening from late April through October. If you’re visiting between November and March, stick to Mahón or Ciutadella where hotels operate year-round. Prices peak in August and drop 30-50% in May and October. Where to Stay in Menorca: South Coast Resorts (Cala Galdana, Son Bou, Santo Tomás)
The south coast is Menorca’s beach holiday heartland. Cala Galdana leads the pack with its horseshoe bay of fine sand, calm shallow water, and a compact but complete resort with restaurants, supermarkets, and water sports. Son Bou offers the island’s longest beach at 2.5km and a larger, more developed resort strip. Santo Tomás and Binigaus are quieter alternatives between the two. All south coast resorts are seasonal: most hotels and restaurants close from late October to late April. In peak summer (July-August), these areas are busy and you’ll pay a premium. In May-June and September, you get the same beaches with half the crowds. A car is useful but not essential if you plan to stay within your resort area. Where to Stay in Menorca: Mahón and the East
Mahón is the year-round capital and the best base for travellers who want restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions alongside beach access. The town clusters around its spectacular 5km harbour, with the old town on the southern cliffs. Staying here means you’re 10 minutes from the airport, surrounded by the island’s best dining, and within a 15-minute drive of Es Grau beach and the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park. Mahón works well for winter visits when resort areas are closed. The east coast also includes the quiet village of Es Castell and the beaches of Punta Prima and Binibeca.
