Oviedo sits 232 metres above sea level in northern Spain, about 26 km from the Bay of Biscay, and its climate is fully oceanic. Expect mild summers, cool but rarely freezing winters, and rain spread across the whole year. The capital of Asturias averages 8.4°C (47°F) in January and 19.3°C (67°F) in August, with roughly 1,005 mm (39.6 in) of precipitation annually and around 1,700 hours of sunshine a year. This is a city where you should pack a light rain layer in every season, including July and August. For a month-by-month breakdown, the table below gives exact highs, lows, rainfall, and sunshine hours, and the things to do guide lists indoor plans for the wetter days.

Oviedo Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

Winters are the wettest and greyest stretch of the year, with December and November together dumping over 200 mm of rain and just 3 hours of daily sun. Daytime highs hold at 12 to 13°C (54 to 55°F) while nights fall to 4 to 5°C (39 to 41°F). Snow in the city itself is rare and usually melts on contact, but the Picos de Europa and the Aramo range, both under an hour’s drive south, get reliable snowpack from December through March. This is also the season when a dense sea fog (known locally as niebla) can blanket the valley around the Nalón river for a full morning. For how to plan around the short days, see the best time to visit Oviedo guide.

Oviedo Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

Spring warms gradually and the rain actually peaks in April at 92 mm, so a waterproof layer is still essential. May is the turning point, when highs reach 19°C (66°F) and lows climb to 10°C (50°F), with sunshine rising to 6 hours a day. The city’s parks, especially the Campo de San Francisco, burst into bloom in April, and this is the month when the first cider terraces (chigres) reopen their outdoor tables on Calle Gascona. April and May are also prime months for walking the Camino Primitivo, the oldest pilgrimage route to Santiago, which starts right here in Oviedo.

Oviedo Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)

Summer is mild and the driest season, but it never turns properly hot or arid. July and August average highs of only 22 to 23°C (72 to 73°F) and drop to a comfortable 15°C (59°F) at night, making Oviedo one of the coolest capitals on the Iberian Peninsula. Rainfall falls to 38 to 45 mm per month, so it still rains briefly about every third day. This is why Asturians call the region Green Spain: the surrounding hills stay vegetated all summer. If you want warm beach weather, the coastal resorts of Gijón and Llanes, 30 to 80 km north on the Cantabrian coast, are the better bet in these months, and the events and festivals calendar fills these weeks with open-air gigs.

Oviedo Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)

September keeps a summer feel, with highs of 22°C (72°F) and the city’s key festival, Día de América en Asturias on the third Sunday of the month. October cools to 18°C (64°F) and November is the single rainiest month of the year at 120 mm, the peak of the autumn front season rolling in off the Atlantic. This is the classic month to try fabada asturiana, the region’s hearty bean stew, in a warm sidrería while the rain falls outside. Pack for wind too: Atlantic gales can push through the valley in November. Oviedo Weather by Month: Humidity and Sea Influence

Relative humidity runs high all year, typically 75 to 85%, because of the sea breeze and the river valley. The Bay of Biscay itself is cold; sea temperatures off Asturias peak at only about 20°C (68°F) in August, so it is a suit-swimmer’s coast. Oviedo has no beaches of its own, being inland, and the city’s altitude of 232 m keeps it a couple of degrees cooler than coastal Gijón.
