South Africa has a largely temperate climate with regional variations, and seasons opposite to the Northern Hemisphere. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate: warm dry summers (December to February, 20-27Β°C) and cool wet winters (June to August, 8-17Β°C). Johannesburg sits at 1,753m on the Highveld, producing a pleasant climate: summer highs of 26Β°C with afternoon thunderstorms, dry sunny winters at 10-17Β°C. Durban on the Indian Ocean coast is subtropical: hot humid summers (24-28Β°C) and mild winters (17-23Β°C). Kruger National Park is best for wildlife viewing from May to September (dry season) when animals concentrate at water sources and vegetation thins. The Garden Route is pleasant year-round, with the best weather from October to April.
