Pico Weather by Month

Portugal › Azores › Pico

Pico’s weather is defined by its mountain. At 2,351 metres, Ponta do Pico creates its own weather system, drawing cloud to its summit even on clear coastal days. The coastal climate is classic Azorean maritime: mild, humid, and changeable. Understanding the difference between coastal and summit conditions is essential for anyone planning to climb. Here is the month-by-month breakdown.

Pico Weather in January

Coastal highs reach 16°C (61°F) with lows of 11°C (52°F), while the summit is often below freezing with snow above 1,500m. Rainfall at sea level averages 140mm over 18 days. The mountain is off-limits to all but experienced winter mountaineers with crampons and ice axes. Whale watching continues year-round from Lajes do Pico, though trips are weather-dependent. The vineyards of the UNESCO landscape are bare, revealing the black basalt corrals (currais) that protect each vine.

Pico Weather in February

Similar to January with coastal highs of 16°C (61°F), lows of 11°C (52°F), and 120mm of rain over 16 days. Sea temperatures bottom out at 16°C (61°F). The mountain summit remains in winter conditions. February can deliver periods of clear, crisp weather between fronts, and the views of the snow-dusted peak from Madalena’s waterfront are spectacular. The adegas (wine cellars) in the vineyards stay open year-round for tastings.

Pico Weather in March

Spring begins slowly. Coastal highs reach 17°C (63°F) with lows of 12°C (54°F) and 110mm of rain. The mountain is still in winter condition above 1,500m. Whale watching picks up as baleen whales enter Azorean waters. The vineyards begin to show the first green shoots. Hiking trails at lower elevations are walkable. The Gruta das Torres lava tube is open year-round (book ahead for guided visits).

Pico Weather in April

Coastal highs rise to 18°C (64°F), lows to 12°C (54°F), with 80mm of rain. Whale watching enters peak season for migrating baleen whales. The mountain snowline recedes, but the summit trail remains closed. Hiking on the lower volcano slopes and along the coast is excellent. Sea temperatures remain at 16°C (61°F). The vinhas (vineyards) turn green, and the lava-rock landscape softens with spring growth.

Pico Weather in May

The mountain climbing season typically opens in mid-May, weather permitting. Coastal highs reach 20°C (68°F), lows 14°C (57°F), and rain drops to 60mm. Summit temperatures range from 0°C to 5°C (32°F to 41°F) with wind chill making it feel colder. The official trail is marked by 47 wooden posts and takes 3-4 hours to ascend, 2-3 hours to descend.
