Pico’s festival calendar is driven by the sea, the saints, and the wine. The whaling heritage runs deep, and the summer festivals honour it with boat races, processions, and communal feasts. Here is what to plan around.
Pico Events: Cais de Agosto
Madalena’s main summer festival, held in August, transforms the harbourfront into a stage for live music, traditional food stalls, and a craft market. The event includes the regatta of traditional whaling boats (botes baleeiros) and runs for several days. Free entry; food and drink are pay-as-you-go. Accommodation in Madalena fills quickly during the festival.
Pico Events: Semana dos Baleeiros (Whalers’ Week)
Held in Lajes do Pico in late August, this is the island’s most distinctive festival. It honours the whaling heritage with botes baleeiros regattas, a whaling boat procession, traditional music, and the serving of caldo de peixe (fish stew) to the community. The festival runs for several days. Lajes is at its most atmospheric during Semana dos Baleeiros, and accommodation in the town books out.
Pico Events: Vindima (Grape Harvest)
The verdelho grape harvest runs from late August through September across the UNESCO vineyard landscape. While not a single festival, the harvest season sees the adegas buzzing, impromptu tastings, and the smell of fermenting must in the air. The Cooperativa Vitivinícola in Madalena is the best starting point for visiting producers during harvest. Some adegas host harvest-day events with grape stomping and traditional food. Ask at the cooperative for the current schedule.
Pico Events: Festas do Divino Espírito Santo
The Holy Spirit festivals run from May to July across Pico’s parishes, with the largest celebrations in Madalena, São Roque, and Lajes. The format is the same across the island: Sunday mass, procession, and communal sopas do Espírito Santo. Visitors are welcome. The Lajes do Pico celebration is particularly atmospheric given the town’s historic character.
