Corvo Events: Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres
On August 15, Corvo celebrates its patron saint, Our Lady of Miracles. The event draws emigrant families back from the United States and Canada, swelling the island’s population of 400 to perhaps double that for the day. The celebration centres on a mass at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, a procession through the village streets, and a communal feast with traditional music and dancing that runs late into the night. It is the most important day of the year on Corvo and the most authentic expression of Azorean emigrant culture you will find anywhere. If you plan to attend, book guesthouses 3-4 months in advance.
Corvo Events: Festas do Divino Espírito Santo
Like every Azorean island, Corvo celebrates the Holy Spirit festivals in spring and early summer. The Corvo celebration is the smallest in the archipelago but no less heartfelt. The format: Sunday mass, procession of the silver crown, and communal sopas in the village hall. Visitors are warmly welcomed and the meal is free. Dates vary by year; ask at the guesthouse or the village cafe for the current schedule.
Corvo Events: Carnaval
Carnaval on Corvo is tiny, village-scale, and utterly charming. The island’s residents organise a small parade, costume dances, and communal meals. It is as far from the Rio Carnival as you can get, and all the better for it. Dates follow the liturgical calendar (February or March).
