Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ second-largest city, sits in the province of South Holland where the River Maas meets the North Sea delta, with much of the city 2 to 7 metres below sea level. Its temperate maritime climate brings mild winters, cool summers and rain spread across the whole year, tempered by the nearby North Sea. Rebuilt almost from scratch after the 1940 bombing, Rotterdam is defined by bold modern architecture, Europe’s largest port and a working, practical character that sets it apart from Amsterdam 80 kilometres to the north.
Rotterdam Weather at a Glance
Rotterdam’s climate (Koppen Cfb) is maritime, with the North Sea about 25 kilometres west smoothing out temperature extremes. Winters run 1°C to 7°C (34°F to 45°F) with regular frost but rare sustained freezing, and summers average 20°C to 23°C (68°F to 73°F), with heatwaves above 30°C (86°F) arriving in short 3 to 5 day bursts a couple of times each summer. The city receives 880mm of rain a year across about 134 wet days, falling as light, frequent showers rather than downpours. August is the wettest month (92mm) and April the driest (42mm). Sunshine ranges from 55 hours in December to 225 hours in May, and the annual average temperature is 10.6°C (51°F).
Seasonal Snapshot
- Spring (March to May): The driest stretch of the year. April averages just 42mm of rain and May is the sunniest month at 225 hours. King’s Day on April 27 and the Rotterdam Marathon in mid-April anchor the season, and tulip fields flower nearby from mid-April.
- Summer (June to August): Warm and lively, with highs of 20°C to 23°C and daylight past 10 PM in June. North Sea Jazz (July), Zomercarnaval (late July) and long riverfront evenings fill the calendar, but August is the wettest month, so carry a light rain jacket.
- Autumn (September to November): September still feels summery at 19°C (66°F) and hosts World Port Days. October and November turn grey and wet, with November averaging 88mm and just 65 sunshine hours, when hotel prices drop sharply.
- Winter (December to February): Short, dark days with sunset before 4:30 PM in December and highs of 6°C to 7°C. The Christmas markets, New Year fireworks on the Erasmus Bridge and the International Film Festival in late January give reasons to visit despite the weather.

Where Is Rotterdam?
Rotterdam is in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, on the tidal River Maas where it meets the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta and the North Sea. The city centre sits about 25 kilometres inland from the North Sea coast at Hoek van Holland, reachable in 40 minutes on metro line B. Amsterdam is 80 kilometres northeast (about 40 minutes by Intercity Direct train), The Hague is 25 kilometres northwest on metro line E, and the Belgian border lies about 60 kilometres south. Rotterdam is famously flat and largely below sea level, protected by dikes and the Maeslant storm-surge barrier downstream, and the Port of Rotterdam stretches 40 kilometres from the city to the sea.
